“A fascinating book.” —James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review A Smithsonian Best Science Book of the Year Winner of the PROSE Award for Best Book in Language & Linguistics Carved into our past and woven into our present, numbers shape our perceptions of the world far more than we think. In this sweeping account of how the invention of numbers sparked a revolution in human thought and culture, Caleb Everett draws on new discoveries in psychology, anthropology, and linguistics to reveal the many things made possible by numbers, from the concept of time to writing, agriculture, and commerce. Numbers are a tool, like the wheel, developed and refined over millennia. They allow us to grasp quantities precisely, but recent research confirms that they are not innate—and without numbers, we could not fully grasp quantities greater than three. Everett considers the number systems that have developed in different societies as he shares insights from his fascinating work with indigenous Amazonians. “This is bold, heady stuff... The breadth of research Everett covers is impressive, and allows him to develop a narrative that is both global and compelling... Numbers is eye-opening, even eye-popping.” —New Scientist “A powerful and convincing case for Everett’s main thesis: that numbers are neither natural nor innate to humans.” —Wall Street Journal

Uncover the language of our universe - numbers - in this wide-ranging whistle-stop tour of the history and majesty of mathematics. Our world simply wouldn't function if we didn't have numbers. But where do they come from? Why do we cut cake the wrong way? How can there be different sizes of infinity? All these questions and more are answered in this engaging romp through the history of numbers by acclaimed science writer, Colin Stuart. But when One finds a friend to run from or run to, Then we can’t call both “One”—that new One must be Two! And should you want something to go in between, You’ll need a new number, a number like Three. Four makes a square when it’s standing around, But what would you see if it flies off the ground? And then when another new One comes to mind, Yell out its name if you know it . . . it’s Five! Do you like the way that these numbers are sounding? Then join our adventure to count beyond counting! Hello Numbers! What Can You Do? is not like any other counting book. As each “new One” appears on the scene, the numbers’ antics hint at ever-deeper math. Young readers ages 3 to 6 will not only count along, but begin to wonder about symmetry, angles, shapes, and more. The Number Concept written by Levi Leonard Conant and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-25 with categories.

This is a book which though small bears evidence of a wonderful amount of research and labor. The author, Professor Conant, has drawn from every possible source to give the reader information upon the origin of number, the use ol numerals, the terms used in mathematics, in the weights and measures, and in every conceivable direction where number comes into use. At first sight the book seems to be dry, or, to say the least, adapted only to the comprehension of those to whom mathematics is a delight or a necessity; but as one looks over the pages very interesting matter is revealed and there is an immense amount of information written in a very attractive style. --"The Buffalo Commercial."Prof. L. L. Conant, of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in his opening chapter on "Counting'' in his just published work on " The Number Concept, Its Origin and Development," says: "Among the speculative questions which arise in connection with the study of arithmetic from a historical standpoint the origin of number is one that has provoked the most lively discussion and has led to a great amount of learned research among the primitive and savage languages of the human race.Prof. Conant can find no trace in the history of even the most barbarous tribes where there is not at least some familiarity with the number concept. This knowledge is in some cases extremely limited. Among some of the forest tribes of Brazil and the native races of Australia the knowledge of numbers does not go beyond 1 and 2, or 1, 2 and 3, but there is the knowledge all the same. There is at least the concept even in the lowest condition of savagery of a difference between one and two, or at least between one and many. Some idea of the scope of this most interesting work may be had from the chapter titles, Counting, Number System Limits, Origin of Number Words, Miscellaneous Number Bases, The Quinary System, and the Vigesimal System. The work shows great research and Prof. Conant has drawn as far as possible upon original resources. He has also taken great care in the selection of his authorities, and makes his work an attractive one even to those who have little or no interest in mathematics. --"The Boston Daily Advertiser."

In 1202, a 32-year old Italian finished one of the most influential books of all time, which introduced modern arithmetic to Western Europe. Devised in India in the seventh and eighth centuries and brought to North Africa by Muslim traders, the Hindu-Arabic system helped transform the West into the dominant force in science, technology, and commerce, leaving behind Muslim cultures which had long known it but had failed to see its potential. The young Italian, Leonardo of Pisa (better known today as Fibonacci), had learned the Hindu number system when he traveled to North Africa with his father, a customs agent. The book he created was Liber abbaci, the 'Book of Calculation', and the revolution that followed its publication was enormous. Arithmetic made it possible for ordinary people to buy and sell goods, convert currencies, and keep accurate records of possessions more readily than ever before. Liber abbaci's publication led directly to large-scale international commerce and the scientific revolution of the Renaissance. Yet despite the ubiquity of his discoveries, Leonardo of Pisa remains an enigma. His name is best known today in association with an exercise in Liber abbaci whose solution gives rise to a sequence of numbers - the Fibonacci sequence - used by some to predict the rise and fall of financial markets, and evident in myriad biological structures. In The Man of Numbers, Keith Devlin recreates the life and enduring legacy of an overlooked genius, and in the process makes clear how central numbers and mathematics are to our daily lives.

The world around us is saturated with numbers. They are a fundamental pillar of our modern society, and accepted and used with hardly a second thought. But how did this state of affairs come to be? In this book, Leo Corry tells the story behind the idea of number from the early days of the Pythagoreans, up until the turn of the twentieth century. He presents an overview of how numbers were handled and conceived in classical Greek mathematics, in the mathematics of Islam, in European mathematics of the middle ages and the Renaissance, during the scientific revolution, all the way through to the mathematics of the 18th to the early 20th century. Focusing on both foundational debates and practical use numbers, and showing how the story of numbers is intimately linked to that of the idea of equation, this book provides a valuable insight to numbers for undergraduate students, teachers, engineers, professional mathematicians, and anyone with an interest in the history of mathematics.

This little and unique book in its Design, Idea and technique deals with the probable possibility of the origin of the Roman and Arabic numbers. Where do our numbers come from, and how were they developed and who developed or invented them? Questions to which there were no answers. Even educationalists, who try every day to teach their pupils mathematics, may did and do not know any answers to these quite simple questions. Every one of us uses the numbers every day, without thinking how they are actually developed. The many color graphics in this book are further enrichment so that it can clearly be recognized which number is exactly meant. Another part deals with the use of the numbers and without these we surely would not have attained this technological standard which we have today, and also naturally with "clever brains“, who we have to thank for this knowledge. In the Chapter no. 3, there are author's own thoughts for the improvement or one also could say the revolt of the number system. Altogether one can say this is a very interesting work, which shall give the Readers much fun.
