I have not named my authorities or given references to any passages in their books. My critics, friendly or unfriendly, may complain of this omission. But I hope they will not. I hope they will see that I have gathered my materials together for a clearly shown purpose with which particular references and frequent defined quotations would have interfered. I wanted to build a wayside cottage for travellers who are in haste and will soon pass on, not a museum for the leisurely student. I hope, then, that my critics will criticize the cottage to their hearts' content-I shall do my best to learn from them, -but I beg them not to treat it as a museum whose curator has either not had the sense or not taken the trouble to ticket its contents. In place of references I have given in an appendix two short lists of easily accessible books which will give technical support to the substance of this little work. I have learnt much from them and taken-all but quoted-much. I make no apology for including, among books from which I have learnt, two of my own. Nothing teaches as solidly as trying to teach. And the record of a learner sometimes helps learners, when the oracles of the learned fail. But I must acknowledge here my own great indebtedness to two of those learned, my old instructors, Sir Edward Schafer and Sir Edwin Ray Lankester, whose admirable lessons in the biological sciences of which they are distinguished professors laid a scientific foundation in me for all my subsequent study.

Excerpt from Studies in Science and Religion It is proper, also, that the author should from his own experience bear testimony that the engrossing cares of a clergyman, in the midst of which these studies have been pursued, need not dull one's interest in scientific study; and, on the other hand, that prolonged study of science does not of itself diminish one's respect for Christianity, and one's interest in the all-important work it is accomplishing for the world. The first chapter was published nearly in its present form in the New Englander, October 1871. The next four chapters appeared at various inter vals in the Bibliotheca Sacra; these have, however, been rewritten and enlarged to meet the demands of the present time. Chapter sixth is in the line of the author's original investigations, and will, with its illustrations, it is hoped, enlarge some what the boundary of human knowledge. Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Religion: Four Lectures Delivered at the Royal Institution, in February and May, 1870 These Lectures, intended as an introduction to a comparative study of the principal religions of the world, were delivered at the Royal Institution in London, in February and March 1870, and printed in Fraser's Magazine of February, March, April, and May of the same year. I declined at that time to publish them in a separate form, hoping that I might find leisure to work up more fully the materials which I had collected for many years. I thought that I should thus be enabled to make these lectures more instructive and more complete, and at the same time meet several objections that had been raised by some critics against the very possibility of a scientific study of religions, and against the views which I ventured to put forward on the origin, the growth, and the real value of the ancient systems of faith, elaborated by different branches of the human race.
