His search for clues to his identity triggers attempts on his life, kidnapping, and a pile of money. The only thing that's certain is that he's a paramilitary pro who can stay one step ahead of his pursuers. . . Who is this man known only by the code tattooed on his neck: XIII? A secret service agent? A spy? A mercenary? No one knows for sure. Did he assassinate the president or was he framed for The Day of the Black Sun?"--V. 1 cover.

Excerpt from History of the Indian Walk, Performed for the Proprietaries of Pennsylvania in 1737, to Which Is Appended a Life of Edward Marshall Of all that has been published relating to the history of Pennsylvania nothing probably has been more contradictory than that relating to the famous Indian Walk. Its beginning, general course and termination have more or less puzzled all writers who have attempted to treat upon it, without suspecting that it was on the part of the Proprietaries intentionally done to cover or conceal their proceedings. The date of its performance has also been a matter of speculation, owing to the conflicting character of the materials, without knowing until quite recently that there really had been a preliminary or trial Walk, which came thus to be confounded with the former though happening several years apart. Since the publication of his history of Bucks county, in 1855, the writer has been a devoted collector of materials on this matter, but circumstances in a busy life have heretofore prevented their earlier preparation for the press. It was his fortune, however, to be employed by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, to arrange the recently acquired Penn Papers from England, which occupied him more or less from October 1872, until 1876. While engaged in this labor pains were taken to secure extracts of whatever had a bearing on the subject. Walking Where We Lived written by Gaylen D. Lee and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-01 with History categories.

The Nim (North Fork Mono) Indians have lived for centuries in a remote region of California’s Sierra Nevada. In this memoir, Gaylen D. Lee recounts the story of his Nim family across six generations. Drawing from the recollections of his grandparents, mother, and other relatives, Lee provides a deeply personal account of his people’s history and culture. In keeping with the Nim’s traditional life-style, Lee’s memoir takes us through their annual seasonal cycle. He describes communal activities, such as food gathering, hunting and fishing, the processing of acorn (the Nim’s staple food), basketmaking, and ceremonies and games. Family photographs, some dating to the beginning of this century, enliven Lee’s descriptions. Woven into the seasonal account is the disturbing story of Hispanic and white encroachment into the Nim world. Lee shows how the Mexican presence in the early nineteenth century, the Gold Rush, the Protestant conversion movement, and, more recently, the establishment of a national forest on traditional land have contributed to the erosion of Nim culture. Walking Where We Lived is a bittersweet chronicle, revealing the persecution and hardships suffered by the Nim, but emphasizing their survival. Although many young Nim have little knowledge of the old ways and although the Nim are a minority in the land of their ancestors, the words of Lee’s grandmother remain a source of strength: "Ashupá. Don’t worry. It’s okay."
