Winner of the 2023 Clark Spence Award from the Mining History Association! An account of the creation of a modern, environmentally sensitive mine as told by the people who developed and worked it. In 1978, a geologist working for the Homestake Mining Company discovered gold in a remote corner of California’s Napa County. This discovery led to the establishment of California’s most productive gold mine in the twentieth century. Named the McLaughlin Mine, it produced about 3.4 million ounces of gold between 1985 and 2002. The mine was also one of the first attempts at creating a new full-scale mine in California after the advent of environmental regulations and the first to use autoclaves to extract gold from ore. One Shot for Gold traces the history of the McLaughlin Mine and how it transformed a community and an industry. This lively and detailed account is based largely on oral history interviews with a wide range of people associated with the mine, including Homestake executives, geologists, and engineers as well as local neighbors of the mine, officials from county governments, townspeople, and environmental activists. Their narratives— supported by thorough research into mining company documents, public records, newspaper accounts, and other materials—chronicle the mine from its very beginning to its eventual end and transformation into a designated nature reserve as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. A mine created at the end of the twentieth century was vastly different from the mines of the Gold Rush. New regulations and concerns about the environmental, economic, and social impacts of a large mine in this remote and largely rural region of the state-required decisions at many levels. One Shot for Gold offers an engaging and accessible account of a modern gold mine and how it managed to exist in balance with the environment and the human community around it.

Trailblazers, entrepreneurs, heroes and rascals unearthed gold and diamonds north of the Mother Lode. At the northern mines, financiers of the Industrial Revolution developed their claims until the country's first environmental legislation dissuaded them. Ghost towns with vast cemeteries attest to historic changes. Gold Rivers of Northern California tells the story of native tribes, trappers, settlers and questionable heroes. The northern mines region remains little changed along the Feather and Yuba Rivers. The Yuba is the nation's richest gold bearing river and still productive 150 years after the gold rush. Gold Rivers of Northern California explores the history, geology and resources of California's Yuba and Feather Rivers wilderness, north of the popularized Mother Lode region of goldrush activity. The primitive conditions of early fortune seekers still prevail. Illustrations and maps are included and thumbnail sketches of the founders, bounders and citizens of the era. Early settlements are described as they roared and declined or developed new character and new foundations. Recreational and cultural programs, parks and museums today follow a diversity of populations through their shifting attitudes. Illustrations, bibliography and maps are included.

When gold was found in Northern California, news of it spread like a wildfire during the spring and summer of 1848. At first, most people thought the reports were too good to be true, but as weeks and months flew by, they heard about more people striking it rich – and imaginations started to run wild. Tens of thousands of people started to dream about gold, and some of them left everything they knew to make the journey to California. It didn’t matter if you were black, white or brown – anyone could go. Even people in Central and South America, Australia, China, and Western Europe heard about the gold and made the journey. By 1855, hundreds of thousands of people had converged on California. In this study, the author shares diary entries from gold seekers, painting a detailed portrait of the frenzy that overtook the world, the lives of the miners, and how the move West changed the fabric of a nation. Without the dreams, hard work, and dedication of the miners who moved West, the United States of America would not be what it is today.
