This novel is inspired by the reality of true events in a small coastal town during the Second World War, some of the characters are based on people who lived, others are purely fictitious. It is a fact realised only in recent years that the town of Colwyn Bay and its population deserved huge recognition for its vitally important administrative role during wartime in feeding the nation. This function is now celebrated annually at a festival each April since the publication of ‘Colwyn Bay Accredited’. The prologue describes a young girl fascinated by the diary of her great grandmother written as a teenager during the war years. We visit Spain, and continue on to Liverpool and North Wales in an obscure seemingly insignificant area. Set in the 21st century, stories of the past and wartime years surface in memories of the characters, all of whom have their own agenda for returning, and many have connections to each other. Rita, retired to the Costa Blanca is an ageing former singer, famous and successful in the past, and now wealthy but widowed and lonely. There has been a family rift with her brother and she has no children of her own. An explanation of the appearance of the mysterious stranger at The Metropole is eventually revealed in a surprising twist. A glimpse of the future is disclosed. Themes of regeneration, the downward spiral of society, in comparison to attitudes during former times of challenge and adversity, and nostalgic curiosity about the past in a hometown are explored. Many mysteries are explained but some things will never be known.

Weaving together the stories of three generations of Samoan women, contrasting the traditional and the modern,They Who Do Not Grieveis a stunning new novel from one of the Pacific's most exciting writers. Malu, brought up by her grandmother, has only a ghostly memory of her dead mother. And 'malu' is also the name of the Samoan woman's traditional tattoo, and the shame and grief not completing the tattoo ceremony can haunt a life forever. Young Malu, watching the Americans living on the island, sees the modern way, the Nineties discontent overtaking the Sixties notions of an island paradise, whilst hearing tales from the older Samoan women of the old life. Although destined to repeat the patterns of the past, Malu can turn them into vivid stories for the future.

Where You Once Belonged written by Kent Haruf and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-05 with Fiction categories.

Set in a fictional Colorado town, Kent Haruf's Where You Once Belonged brings to life small town America and the characters that keep the community together. Heavy-built Jack Burdette is quite literally too big for his boots – and too big, certainly, for the small-town attitudes of Holt, Colorado. But when he fails to make the grade as a college footballer, and takes a job with the local farmers’ cooperative, it seems he has finally settled into the rhythm and routine of everyday life. Outward appearances can be deceptive, however, as Jack proves: returning from a weekend conference with a new wife in tow, then leaving her behind and skipping town with a bundle of other folks’ money. Nearly a decade later, no one has forgiven or forgotten, and when Jack reappears, resentment runs high. Once again though, it is Jack whose presence – even more than his eight-year absence – proves the most devastating.

She is commissioned by Charles Wellington, Earl of Southwell, as a governess for the two six-year-old twin daughters who have set themselves the task of rejecting any governess who applies. But the girls like her, and the count seems clearly taken with her as well, although she does not tell him her true origin. Just when they confess their love, Jane's ex-fiancé, Albert, appears who let her sit years ago. Albert quickly finds out that Jane and Charles are busier than just having a business relationship and becomes jealous. He tries again to win her heart. When Jane Albert finally declines, he takes revenge by informing Charles about her background and the financial situation of her family. Charles sees himself confirmed in his suspicion that Jane is only after his fortune and dismisses her. Will the truth come out in the end and will Charles and Jane find to each other?
