For centuries music has been passed on in many ways, but the aural tradition is perhaps the most lasting. The question and answer response singing style is what we call a "Follow Me!" song. Not only are Follow Me! songs enjoyable to sing, but they also provide an encouraging and unforgettable music learning experience. The Green Grass Grows All Around is no ordinary Follow Me! song. Beginning with a scene in a lush green meadow, this classic story is revealed in beautiful, vivid color and accompanied by an endearing tune. As the tale develops from a simple hole in the ground to a charming conclusion, you will be left with a smile on your face.

This is an old traditional folksong made famous by Pete Seeger in the 1960s and is just as appealing to children today as it was back then. It is a cumulative story and folksong starting with a hole in the ground, a tree in the hole, a limb on the tree, a branch on the limb, a twig, a nest, an egg, a bird, an eyelash, a bug, a wing and finally a germ. Children enjoy the repeating chorus and trying to remember the correct order.

This book of poetry by West Viginia native and author Philip Jarrett transcends the nostalgia that often blurs the harsh realities of his home state. His deft use of rhythm and rhyme serves as a reminder of what was lost when free verse became the only acceptible mode of presentation. Ignoring the limitations inherent in the label of 'primitive art' he brings a sophistication to forgotten forms that must be read to be appreciated. He is in his late fifties and his subject matter is adult. These poems are not intended for children, bearing in mind that maturity is seldom related to chronological age. Though he recognizes some may be offended by a few of his poems, his intent is not to offend but to illuminate. He bears no ill will to those he offends, but rather encourages them to turn off the light and go back to sleep.

His hard-fought wisdom and keen observations are a gift to all of us and this book is true to everything I’ve known Tony to be: funny, raw, vulnerable, and real. His stark honesty helps us all reflect on ways we are often to blame for our biggest challenges. Holistic Management can unlock the potential for productivity and diversity on our land, but also living in a way where we can see and fulfill our own potential. —Cory Carman, fourth-generation rancher; mother Through the pages, I found myself becoming more aligned with my dignity and self-worth, recognizing the tremendous value that land stewards offer. If we want intact grasslands for the next seven generations, we must work with a sense of urgency. —Amber Smith, program director for Women in Ranching, Western Landowners Alliance This book is truly about growth from soil to your soul. Embedded in the space between the beautifully crafted words is an invitation for us all to practice our lives as if all life depends upon it. Because it does and Tony proves it. Be prepared to be surprised. —Christopher Cooke, Holistic Management field professional and ecological outcome verifier As a next-generation land manager facing the threats of climate change, biodiversity loss, and an uncertain sociopolitical future, I look to the champions of the soil surface to help guide my decisions to help reverse these trends. Tony Malmberg is one such man. —Cody Spencer, bison rancher; Holistic Management practitioner Tony’s story is eloquent, joy-providing, and as complete as it can be. The loss of life on this planet is a serious issue. Tony reminds us to ask, “How must we behave, what must we do to promote life—at, above, and below the ground level?” —Kelly Brink, rancher and student of rangeland herbivory, Deer Creek Ranch - Gordon, Nebraska. There is an old rancher adage: “If we can just get the cows to green grass in the spring.” Farmers, ranchers, ecologists, environmentalists, and others with a conservation ethos understand that HM principles are not easily understood or applied. Green Grass in the Spring provides tremendous clarity as we see through the eyes and learn from the life experiences of Tony Malmberg. —Ron Bolze, professor of rangeland management; executive director of Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition

Between 1935 and 1970 the Irish Folklore Commission (Coimisiún Béaloideasa Éireann), under-funded and at great personal cost to its staff, assembled one of the world’s largest folklore collections. This study draws on the extensive government files on the Commission in the National Archives of Ireland and on a wide variety of other primary and secondary sources, in order to recount and assess the work and achievement of this world-famous institute. The cultural, linguistic, political and ideological factors that had a bearing on the establishment and making permanent of the Commission and that impinged on many aspects of its work are here elucidated. The genesis of the Commission is traced and the vision and mission of its Honorary Director, Séamus Ó Duilearga (James Hamilton Delargy), is outlined. The negotiations that preceded the setting up of the Commission in 1935 as well as protracted efforts from 1940 to 1970 to place it on a permanent foundation are recounted and examined at length. All the various collecting programmes and other activities of the Commission are described in detail and many aspects of its work are assessed and, in some cases, reassessed. This study also deals with the working methods and conditions of employment of the Commission’s field and Head Office staff as well with Séamus Ó Duilearga’s direction of the Commission.
