SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER INTERNATIONAL PRIZE • A “formally daring, emotionally devastating, and deeply political” (The New York Times Book Review) exploration of personal grief through the prism of the color white, from the internationally bestselling author of The Vegetarian “Stunningly beautiful writing . . . delicate and gorgeous . . . one of the smartest reflections on what it means to remember those we’ve lost.”—NPR While on a writer’s residency, a nameless narrator focuses on the color white to creatively channel her inner pain. Through lyrical, interconnected stories, she grapples with the tragedy that has haunted her family, attempting to make sense of her older sister’s death using the color white. From trying to imagine her mother’s first time producing breast milk to watching the snow fall and meditating on the impermanence of life, she weaves a poignant, heartfelt story of the omnipresence of grief and the ways we perceive the world around us. In captivating, starkly beautiful language, The White Book offers a multilayered exploration of color and its absence, of the tenacity and fragility of the human spirit, and of our attempts to graft new life from the ashes of destruction.

Most of us believe in information. Some believe in truths, while others believe in magic. Information is what we can see, truth is what we feel, and magic is what we instinctively know is true. On December 4th 1981 the president of the United States issued Executive Order 12333 concerning the activities of the intelligence community. Paragraph 2.11 of that order states; "No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in assassination." But upon learning of the political ties and aspirations of one charismatic young entertainer and philanthropist, certain agencies broke that order in the fall of 1996 when the star was killed in a barrage of bullets fired by a confidential informant commissioned for just such an act. After a decade of silence the files have been unsealed and the shooter will now be revealed. Some call him a hero, others say he's a villain, and some even call him a god. The White Book provides a glimpse at man's perspectives of the cultural history of the United States: assassination, government cover-ups, and his perpetual pursuit of what sets us all free: the truth.

The neurologic examination is often viewed as a daunting monstrosity, byzantine in nature, complex to teach and cumbersome to learn. However, neurologic conditions are not uncommon in GP and hospital practice, and a grounded understanding of pertinent neurologic symptoms, signs and conditions is absolutely vital. This book serves to demystify the seemingly convoluted processes behind the neurologic examination, with chapters focussing on bringing the reader back to the basics, breaking complicated techniques down into its individual steps, supplemented by clear and concise explanation of neurologic principles. The book discusses neurologic signs and symptoms commonly encountered in our daily practice, with flow-charts, pictures and tables to help the reader learn, shape and build a solid foundation in neurology. Tips from examiner and specific case examples are included to improve the reader's grasp of the topics. This easy-to-read guidebook is essential for all medical students and physicians seeking to prepare for their professional examinations, to improve on their care of our patients, or simply to understand the wonderful inner-workings of neurology a little better.Well written textbooks which focus on neurologic examination and written in a palatable manner for the non-neurologist, are rare and few. They are often admixed with other non-neurologic topics (e.g. respiratory, cardiac or abdominal examination), with superficial and cursory discussion of neurologic conditions. At the other end of the spectrum, neurology textbooks are often written in a manner better suited to neurologists than to non-neurologists, struggling to better understand the basic concepts. In my years of teaching students from all 3 local medical schools studying for their undergraduate medical degrees, and medical officers preparing for the MRCP PACES examination, a common problem they encountered was the lack of a palatable yet informative neurologic text which helps them understand the concepts without murdering their interest in the topic. I believe this book serves to fill that gap, and to hopefully better prepare our doctors in their careers, and to nurture their love and interest in this subject I so love.

'I loved this book for its depth and perception, for its beauty and eerie rhythms, but most of all for its wonderfully dream-like spell. It's breathtaking' Brandon Taylor A student moves to the city to research Gothic nudes, renting an apartment from a painter, Agnes, who lives in another town with her husband. One day, Agnes arrives in the city and settles into the upstairs studio. Agnes tells stories of her youth, her family, her marriage, and ideas for her art. As the months pass, it becomes clear that Agnes might not have a place to return to. Her stories are frenetic; her art scattered and unfinished, white paint on a white canvas. White on White is a sharp exploration of what it means to be truly vulnerable and laid bare. 'Deeply humane, quietly devastating, mesmerisingly beautiful' Olivia Sudjic 'Marvellous' Lauren Groff 'Gentle, mysterious and profound' Marina Abramovic 'Enthralling' Observer 'An exceptionally elegant, intelligent, and original writer' Sigrid Nunez

Each government engaged in the European War has issued a White, Green, Blue or Yellow Book, explaining the causes which led to its entry into the great conflict. These books are all interesting, and are full of valuable documentary information; but, if the busy people of America are to understand the reasons for their own participation in the war, some shorter cut to the desired end must be devised. We, therefore, offer a BLACK AND WHITE BOOK, in which our nation's reasons for going to war are set forth in pictures, a universal language which can be read at a glance by any one who has eyes to see. On August 1st, 1914, we were at peace with all the world. We were bound by ties of blood to every race on earth. Particularly close and intimate were our relations with the German people, whom we welcomed to our shores as among our most desirable citizens. Then, far away from us, apart from our interests or concerns—like a tragedy being played on the other side of the footlights—broke the frightful war of 1914. We looked on fascinated, but not convinced of the reality of its cruelty. For a little over eight months we watched it, when, on April 22nd, 1915, there appeared in the New York papers an advertisement stating that the great passenger ship “LUSITANIA” would sail on the 7th of May for Liverpool. In the next column, in equally conspicuous type, appeared a sinister warning to Americans, telling them to keep off the seas at peril of their lives. This was signed, “IMPERIAL GERMAN EMBASSY, Washington, D. C.” On May 7th came the fulfilment of the threat, and we awoke to the fact that we were not an audience looking at a tragedy, but the victims of the tragedy itself. Not until then was it brought home to us that our good German friends, whom we thought we knew so well, had been inoculated with the virus of a Junker madness, and that we were dealing with a people who had cast from them every restraint of fair fighting and had become the outlaw nation of the world. In the following pictures the Artist has attempted to show “Why we are at war.”
