Celle d’un militaire britannique fasciné par l’exemple d’Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) et par ses expéditions polaires ; un homme excentrique, généreux, d’une volonté exceptionnelle, qui réussira ce que Shackleton avait raté un siècle plus tôt : relier à pied une extrémité du continent à l’autre. Une fois à la retraite, il tentera d’aller encore plus loin en traversant l’Antarctique seul, sans assistance. Il abandonne tout près du but, dans un état de santé tel qu’il meurt quelques heures après son sauvetage. Édifiant destin d’un homme perdu par une quête d’impossible, qui n’est pas sans rappeler Percy Fawcett, autre explorateur guidé par une obsession, dont David Grann avait conté l’histoire dans La Cité perdue de Z. “Tout le monde a son Antarctique”, a écrit Thomas Pynchon, rien n’est moins vrai dans ce récit magnifique qu’on ne peut lâcher avant de l’avoir accompagné à son terme.
