The White Knights A major misconception of Southern American history of that everyone owned slaves and were hard core Confederates. But there were Union sympathizers all over the south who remained loyal to the Union, and many paid the price with their lives. Knight's Company was such a band of Confederate army "deserters: that turned against the Confederacy during the Civil War. Knights formed after the fall of Vicksburg, when the struggling white farmer boys were disheartened in fighting a "rich man's war." Knight's Company was composed of approximately 125 men from Jones, Jasper, Covington, and Smith counties who organized to defend themselves against the Confederates. Many of the men came from families who bore patriotic given names as Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. Furthermore, many did not own slaves and were fighting a rich man's war. There were Union sympathizers just like them across the south, who also faced execution and hardships of not being behind the Southern cause. Confederate officials, embarrassed and enraged by the Knight's defiance, sent Col. Robert Lowry with bloodhounds to flush the Knight men out of the swamps. Many were killed. Some escaped to join the regular Union Army after making their way to New Orleans. This book is a short guide to some of the men who were members of Knight's Company. For a more complete review of the fascinating stories of the Knights we recommend Victoria E. Bynum's book, The Free State of Jones. These men are also the subject of a major motion picture being released on June 24.

With its fiery crosses and nightriders in pointed hoods and flowing robes, the Ku Klux Klan remains a recurring nightmare in American life. What began in the earliest post–Civil War days as a social group engaging in drunken hijinks at the expense of perceived inferiors soon turned into a murderous paramilitary organization determined to resist the “evils” of radical Reconstruction. For six generations and counting, the Klan has inflicted misery and death on countless victims nationwide and since the early 1920s, has expanded into distant corners of the globe. From the Klan’s post–Civil War lynchings in support of Jim Crow laws, to its bloody stand against desegregation during the 1960s, to its continued violence in the militia movement at the turn of the 21st century, this revealing volume chronicles the complete history of the world’s oldest surviving terrorist organization from 1866 to the present. The story is told without embellishment because, as this work demonstrates, the truth about the Ku Klux Klan is grim enough.

The words of a dying man, the theft of a legendary battleship, and the threats posed by the Mitikas Empire's civil war were but a few of the concerns that plagued Simon Dodds' mind upon his return to naval service. What was far more disturbing was the amount of information he wasn't being given... Across the other side of the known universe a terrible fate had befallen a once glorious Imperial nation; a fate that dozens of governments throughout the galaxy were keen to keep secret for as long as possible. But the danger was growing, and only a few months after his return Dodds would find his world, along with that of his old wingmates, flipped on its head. Very soon the five pilots would come face to face with that which destroyed an empire: an unforgiving, unstoppable, and totally unrelenting foe. There seemed to exist only one glimmer of hope of driving back the darkness - The ATAF Project - a secretly developed set of starfighters that well may just harbour some terrible secrets of their own...

One of NPR's Best Books of the Year Finalist for the 2022 Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime The inside story of how a courageous FBI informant helped to bring down the KKK organization responsible for a brutal civil rights–era killing. By early 1966, the work of Vernon Dahmer was well known in south Mississippi. A light-skinned Black man, he was a farmer, grocery store owner, and two-time president of the Forrest County chapter of the NAACP. He and Medgar Evers founded a youth NAACP chapter in Hattiesburg, and for years after Evers’s assassination Dahmer was the chief advocate for voting rights in a county where Black registration was shamelessly suppressed. This put Dahmer in the crosshairs of the White Knights, with headquarters in nearby Laurel. Already known as one of the most violent sects of the KKK in the South, the group carried out his murder in a raid that burned down his home and store. A year before, Tom Landrum, a young, unassuming member of a family with deep Mississippi roots, joined the Klan to become an FBI informant. He penetrated the White Knights’ secret circles, recording almost daily journal entries. He risked his life, and the safety of his young family, to chronicle extensively the clandestine activities of the Klan. Veteran journalist Curtis Wilkie draws on his exclusive access to Landrum’s journals to re-create these events—the conversations, the incendiary nighttime meetings, the plans leading up to Dahmer’s murder and its erratic execution—culminating in the conviction and imprisonment of many of those responsible for Dahmer’s death. In riveting detail, When Evil Lived in Laurel plumbs the nature and harrowing consequences of institutional racism, and brings fresh light to this chapter in the history of civil rights in the South—one with urgent implications for today.

In 1860, during their first attempt to create the Golden Circle, several thousand Knights assembled in southern Texas to "colonize" the northern Mexico. Due to insufficient resources and organizational shortfalls, however, that filibuster failed. Later, the Knights shifted their focus and began pushing for disunion, spearheading prosecession rallies, and intimidating Unionists in the South. They appointed regional military commanders from the ranks of the South's major political and military figures, including men such as Elkanah Greer of Texas, Paul J. Semmes of Georgia, Robert C. Tyler of Maryland, and Virginius D. Groner of Virginia. Followers also established allies with the South's rabidly prosecession "fire-eaters," which included individuals such as Barnwell Rhett, Louis Wigfall, Henry Wise, and William Yancy.
