Since the official flag raising on July 9, 1945, the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) has become an integral part of global defense for the United States. A mere week after formation, Project Trinity tested the first atomic bomb at an isolated site, which was 100 miles north on what was then part of the Alamogordo Bombing Range--a test site for B-17 pilots. Back at White Sands Proving Ground, as it was then named, personnel were unaware of the massive new weapon tested to their north. Instead their focus was upon the arrival of what would be 300 railroad cars of captured German V-2 rockets and associated equipment. Later that year, over 100 captured German scientists, among them Werner von Braun, would arrive at White Sands to assist in V-2 technology, launching America's race to space; tens of thousands of rockets and missiles have since been fired on the range. Thousands of family members also lived and worked at the range, and their stories can be found inside as well.

Established in south-central New Mexico at the end of World War II, White Sands Missile Range is the largest overland military reserve in the western hemisphere. It was the site of the first nuclear explosion, the birthplace of the American space program, and the primary site for testing U.S. missile capabilities. In this environmental history of White Sands Missile Range, Ryan H. Edgington traces the uneasy relationships between the military, the federal government, local ranchers, environmentalists, state game and fish personnel, biologists and ecologists, state and federal political figures, hunters, and tourists after World War II—as they all struggled to define and productively use the militarized western landscape. Environmentalists, ranchers, tourists, and other groups joined together to transform the meaning and uses of this region, challenging the authority of the national security state to dictate the environmental and cultural value of a rural American landscape. As a result, White Sands became a locus of competing geographies informed not only by the far-reaching intellectual, economic, and environmental changes wrought by the cold war but also by regional history, culture, and traditions.

Throughout November and December 2003 and January 2004, Walcoff Technologies conducted an intensive archaeological survey for portions of an existing powerline on White Sands Missile Range and Fort Bliss (13 miles on White Sands Missile Range and 10 miles on Fort Bliss). The project area covers approximately 278 acres in Doña Ana and Otero Counties. On White Sands Missile Range three new archaeological sites (LA 143,286, LA 143,287, and LA 143,288) and 41 isolated occurrences were recorded. Seventeen previously recorded sites were revisited (LA 16268; LA 51223; LA 62695; LA 62696; LA 62706; LA 63186; LA 63283; LA 62384; LA 63285; LA 63287; LA 70279; LA 70281; LA 117,502; LA 127,315; LA 127,317; LA 127,318; and LA 127,319). On Fort Bliss three previously recorded sites were revisited (LA 91055; LA 92320; and LA 93605). Many of these site [sic] are considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under criterion (d). It is recommended that project activity in the vicinity of these sites be kept to the existing powerline access road. All brush clearing should be done by hand and an archaeologist should be present to monitor this activity. Provided these provisions are met, it is recommended that project activity be allowed to proceed as currently planned.
