Access to appropriate, affordable, effective, and safe health technologies is paramount, especially in low-resource settings, where burden of non-communicable diseases adds on to the infectious diseases. NCDs account for a staggering 74% of global deaths, with 86% of premature fatalities occurring in resource-constrained regions. Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory conditions, and diabetes collectively contribute to over 80% of these premature NCD-related deaths. Addressing this challenge requires targeted interventions and innovative solutions tailored to LMICs. The 2024 Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for low-resource settings includes commercially available solutions and prototypes. This 7th edition showcases 21 technologies, each with a full assessment. It also includes updates for technologies previously featured in previous compendia editions. Assessments include clinical aspects, relation to WHO technical specifications, regulatory compliance, criteria on health technology assessment and health technology management, local production viability, and intellectual property considerations. Beyond presenting these innovations, the Compendium serves as a catalyst for increased interaction among stakeholders—ministries of health, procurement officers, donors, developers, biomedical engineers, clinicians, and users. By providing evidence-based assessments and relevant information, it aims to drive use of innovative health technology and expand global access, particularly for low-resource settings for populations in need.

Ethics And Biomedical Engineering written by Leandro Pecchia and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-12 with Medical categories.

This book is about the interaction between biomedical engineering and ethics during emergencies, such as low-resource settings and the COVID-19 pandemic. It addresses the issues between the universalism of human rights, ethical principles, and regulatory standards of biomedical devices in the context of emergencies. Ethics and Biomedical Engineering: Facing Global Health Emergencies connects biomedical engineering and ethics with particular regard to emergency context such as in low-income countries and the COVID-19 pandemic. It examines how the COVID-19 crisis exposed gaps in access to healthcare, ignited debates about resource allocation, and highlighted the importance of patient privacy. The book presents case studies conducted in Africa and the role of the biomedical engineer (and more generally the scientist) during a pandemic or other health emergency. The book also addresses the way in which the pandemic has been addressed in low-income contexts. Finally, it also explains the need for an interdisciplinary approach between scientists, ethicists, and policymakers to improve outcomes in the future. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in bioengineering. It would also be useful for policy makers and medical professionals that could be faced with ethical dilemmas in times of crisis.

This extensively updated second edition describes the increasing use of digital health technologies. It reflects and describes the scenario that healthcare consumers and providers have realized the potential of digital health technologies in light of the recent global healthcare issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Smartphones have become a medical hub through which patients can connect with their medical practitioners and share their vital signs collected through wearables. Concurrently, consumer mobile health apps have shifted from providing generic functionalities to supporting specific diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. Advancements in digital healthcare have also assisted clinicians, who have relied on artificial intelligence-based applications to support their decision-making. The extent to which digital health has advanced, and is being used by medical professionals and patients, is at the core of this book. Digital Health: From Assumptions to Implementations addresses the emerging trends and enabling tools contributing to technological advances in 21st Century healthcare practice. These areas include generic topics such as mobile health and telemedicine, as well as specific concepts such as social media for health, wearables and quantified-self trends. Also covered are the psychological models leveraged in the design of solutions to persuade us to follow some recommended actions, the design and educational facets of the proposed innovations, as well as ethics, privacy, security and liability aspects influencing its acceptance. Furthermore, sections on economic aspects of the proposed innovations are included, analyzing the potential business models and entrepreneurship opportunities in the domain.

Sustainable Communities For A Healthy Planet written by Katharine Zywert and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-01 with Health & Fitness categories.

Sustainable Communities for a Healthy Planet presents an unconventional collection of ideas, practices, and ways of living together with the potential to enable long-term human and planetary health. Grounded in first-hand accounts from researchers, health practitioners, and social innovators across diverse fields, Katharine Zywert’s book argues that the most promising approaches often depart substantially from the incentive structures, goals, and mindsets that define the status quo and do not necessarily align with mainstream sustainability discourses. The book instead presents promising approaches that disrupt dominant ideas about mental health, ageing, and chronic illness; circumvent exploitative markets for medications, medical technologies, and professionalized care; attend not only to the health of individual human bodies, but to the health of internal ecologies, human populations, nonhuman species, and the planet as a whole; and embody alternative, more inclusive ways of practicing medicine within communities and ecosystems. The stories assembled in this book illustrate how human beings might live healthy lives, supported by health systems that are not dependent on perpetual economic growth. Sustainable Communities for a Healthy Planet challenges conventional ways of thinking about the future of health systems and asks hard questions about what it takes to cultivate human and planetary health in a time of rapid ecological, economic, and social change.

Technologies For Neonatal Care In Lmics written by Olugbenga A. Mokuolu and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-20 with Medical categories.

Newborn babies are arguably the most vulnerable class of patients in any society. They are entirely incapable of surviving on their own without external help from carers and society. A poorly attended newborn will more likely die than one who received well-guided and knowledgeable care. Therefore, the neonatal mortality rate of any society represents a quick measure of the efficiency of its healthcare system, available technologies, and knowledge base. It is common knowledge that low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) contribute over 80% of the global annual burden of neonatal deaths. Limited access to sustainable technologies for neonatal care is one of the major impediments to lowering neonatal mortality in LMICs. Highly sophisticated technologies as applied in high-income countries (HICs) may be unaffordable and unsustainable at LMICs, however, a well-crafted basic technology may be appreciably effective in lifesaving, affordable, and easily maintainable by the indigenous people. The promotion, adaptation, implementation, and scale-up of such appropriate technologies by other LMICs could offer them the quickest route to better neonatal survival.
