The Second World War was fought not only on the front lines but also in secrets, some of which have never been revealed. One such secret was buried in the deep, dark forest of Katyn, Poland. The other in the pages of a notebook hidden in an otherwise unremarkable café in an ancient Polish city. That notebook, known as the Scottish Book, was an obscure work of intellectual gamesmanship between a specialized group of mathematicians who met at a local pub near the town’s medieval university, where they shared and solved complex mathematical problems in the pages of the book. In 1939, as the Nazis overran the country, the book mysteriously vanished from its hiding place in the café. Some of its contributors avoided certain death by fleeing Poland for America, where the government recruited them. Ultimately, some of these intellectuals became participants in a deadly undertaking: the Manhattan Project. Who Has Buried the Dead? may be fiction, but it draws on years of research to plausibly answer the real questions surrounding one of the last great secrets of the Second World War. What did the Scottish Book contain that led the NKVD, the Gestapo, and the Allies on a desperate search, using any means to find it? Why has its existence not factored into the telling of Second World War history? What is ultimately revealed within the Scottish Book that brought mortal enemies and their top spy operatives into a deadly contest for its discovery and seizure?

An archeological study of burial grounds across England, shedding light on pagan executions, the Black Death, and much more. In the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, archeologists unearthed twelve skeletons—ten without heads. Later examination revealed the place to be a cemetery for ancient Anglo-Saxons who had been sentenced to death. In the Middle Ages, those who committed suicide were subjected to desecration, a practice that went largely unrecorded. While plague pits, mass graves for victims of the Black Death, have only recently started betraying their secrets. Although unpalatable to some, these burial grounds are an important record of cultural history and social change. Burying the Dead explores how these sites reveal the attitudes, practices, and beliefs of the people who made them.

Charlie Edwards worked many years at his father's funeral parlor, but Charlie was getting pretty bored talking to the dead every day and not getting any response. So one day he decided he would pick up someone at the local pub. Put something in their drink and drive them back to the funeral parlor. Then he would place them in a casket with a glass top so he could see their face and talk to them. When his drugged victims woke up they weren't too happy to be hanging out at the Edwards Funeral Parlor as Charlie Edwards’ entertainment. Charlie didn't care what they thought because being able to talk to a live person meant everything to Charlie. Charlie would get the same response from the people he drugged. They would plea for Charlie to let them go. Some would offer him money, you name it, but that wasn't his intention. Charlie was just lonely and sick and tired of talking to a bunch of stiffs. Charlie would try to console the person he held captive, but that was no use. Charlie decided if they didn't cooperate he would take them out back to the cemetery and bury them alive for not cooperating. Charlie’s little escapade went on for several months until one of his victims persuaded him to let them out. But that was a bad idea the victim tried to overpower Charlie, but Charlie just pulled out his switchblade knife out of his pocket and stabbed them in the neck. Charlie decided from now on that wasn't going to happen again. As the months went by and the body count piled up in the cemetery Charlie was getting bored again and decided to stop bringing people back to the cemetery to bury alive. Charlie’s victims he buried alive, weren't forgiving. One stormy night Charlie was alone in the funeral parlor eating a sandwich and combing the hair of a dead person in their casket. The lights started flickering on and off because of the storm. Charlie thought he heard a noise coming from outside the funeral parlor. Charlie said to himself, “It sounds like an angry mob of people.” But Charlie just brushed it off and said, “It must be the storm playing with my imagination.” Charlie just shrugged it off as just his imagination playing tricks on him. He started backcombing the dead person’s hair and was more concerned with making sure the dead person looked their best for their funeral in the morning. Then all of a sudden the people Charlie drugged and buried alive in the cemetery were back and ready to take Charlie to the cemetery out back to be buried alive. Charlie said, "What's that noise? It must be the storm." Then the door burst open and Charlie dropped his sandwich on the floor as his eyes flew wide open.

Do cannibals exist? Is there evidence for contemporary human sacrifice? What are vampires? The Buried Soul charts the story of the human response to death from prehistory to the present day. At some moment in human history, our ancestors invented "death." Retracing four million years, this book investigates the many ways that humans, in facing death, first understood what it was to be alive. Their dramatic confrontation with mortality survives in early accounts of sacrifices, in blindfolded bodies preserved in peat bogs, and in the elaborate burials of disabled or deformed individuals among Neanderthals and the people of the Ice Age.Timothy Taylor has spent his life sifting through the relics of encounters with death. In The Buried Soul, he gathers evidence of how the ancients saw their universe and asks how we came to have not only a sense of the afterlife but also an image of the soul. After we began to speak but before we could write, Taylor suggests that early humans, in an astonishing conceptual leap, divided the body from the spirit that animated it. Rituals arose that attempted to placate, tempt, scapegoat, destroy, or contain this potentially malevolent spirit. Death was seen as a form of birth that set loose not only souls but also deities. Appeasing them required rites so powerful they have echoed down through the ages to make macabre new puzzles for archaeologists and forensic scientists. In Taylor's radical investigation of the human soul we encounter vampirism, cannibalism, near-death experiences, modern-day human sacrifice, and modern mummification. His search spans all of human prehistory and history through to the present and interweaves the author's own experience of the bewilderment of death.

Deep in the heart of North Yorkshire, at a place called Walkington Wold, there lies a rather unusual burial ground, an Anglo-Saxon execution cemetery. Twelve skeletons were unearthed by archaeologists, ten without skulls, later examination of the skeletons revealed that their owners were all subjected to judicial execution by decapitation, one of which required several blows.Similar fates have befallen other wretched souls, the undignified burial of suicides - in the Middle Ages, the most profound of sins - and the desecration of their bodies, go largely unrecorded. Whilst plague pits, vast cemeteries where victims of the Black Death were tossed into the ground, their bodies festering one on top of another, are only today betraying their secrets.Although unpalatable to some, these burial grounds are an important part of our social heritage. They have been fashioned as much by the people who founded and used them, as by the buildings, gravestones and other features which they contain. They are records of social change; the symbols engraved upon individual memorials convey a sense of inherent belief systems, as they were constructed, adapted or abandoned depending on people's needs.Symbols of Mortality explores how these attitudes, practices and beliefs about death have undergone continual change. By studying the development of society's funerary spaces, the author will reveal how we continue to reinforce our relationships with the dead, in a constant and on-going effort to maintain a bond with them.

Drawing on extensive historical and anthropological research, personal accounts, and interviews with people who work in the funeral industry, Penny Colman examines the compelling subjects of death and burial across cultures and societies. The text, enriched with stories both humorous and poignant, includes details about the decomposition and embalming processes (an adult corpse buried six feet deep without a coffin will usually take five to ten years to turn into a skeleton) and describes the various customs associated with containing remains (the Igala people in Nigeria have a custom of burying people in as many as twenty-seven layers of clothing). Intriguing facts are revealed at every turn; for example, in Madagascar winter was considered the corpse-turning season. This comprehensive book also includes a list of burial sites of famous people, images in the arts associated with death, fascinating epitaphs and gravestone carvings, a chronology and a glossary, and over a hundred black-and-white photographs, most of which were taken by the author. Penny Colman writes with compassion and intelligence and humanizes the difficult subjects of death and burial. The result is a powerful look at an inevitable part of life--death.
