The year is 2008. The story is set against the backdrop of the momentous events of that year ? the beginning of the global financial crisis, the Democrat and Republican primaries and the rise of a black man from Illinois to the office of President of the United States. The book opens with the central character, George Marlin, an Australian living in the United States, being diagnosed with cancer. George is the most successful golfer of all time and is highly respected and a role model for millions. During a routine interview with David Lloyd, a veteran TV interviewer, George breaks down under pressure from David and publicly admits he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Eventually George makes two crucial decisions. Firstly, after going through an initial round of chemotherapy treatment which has seriously affected his health, he will have no further treatment for the cancer. Secondly he decides to do further TV interviews with David. The inevitability of his eventual death has opened his eyes to the bizarre world he is living in. There are signs everywhere that the planet is on the brink of disaster and major changes are needed if humanity is to have any hope of survival. But no one seems willing to make the necessary changes. Perhaps he can use the interviews and his celebrity status to challenge people?s central beliefs and values and make them aware of the urgency of the situation. The interviews, screened live on American primetime, begin with discussion of George?s health and his golfing career but quickly become more controversial. They put considerable pressure on David who is under management orders to ensure George keeps to ?safe? subjects that won?t offend their corporate advertisers. George launches an attack on the ?health industry? and then targets the media itself, criticising its distortion of news. Ignoring David?s attempts to steer the interviews away from controversy he attacks the unhealthy domination of the media by Rupert Murdoch and the failure of western governments to reign in his burgeoning empire. Finally David is forced to accept that he is no longer the fearless investigative journalist who started out with such high ideals and has instead become a pawn of management. Putting his career on the line he decides to ignore management and give George the freedom to talk about whatever subjects he chooses. As the interviews develop, readers of the book follow the public response to the program, the reaction of big business, the behind the scenes drama at the TV station and the interplay between the four main characters. Although the interview material is primarily American-based, George also uses events in Australia to illustrate some of the points he is making and the book is laced with Australian humour and George?s colourful language. The interviews rapidly become a ratings hit and attract controversy and criticism from mainstream institutions as George and David question the truth of many of the sacred cows of western belief. These include Darwin?s ?winner takes all? theory of survival of the fittest, the infallibility of modern science, and our misplaced faith in ?experts? including the economists and investment bankers whose incompetence has led to the financial crisis enveloping the world. As George?s health deteriorates the television station has been downplaying the seriousness of the threat he poses, anticipating that a quick death will remove this thorn in its side. However George tries an unorthodox method of treatment and unexpectedly his health begins to improve. George has been emphasising the theme of change throughout the show and as Barack Obama emerges from the obscurity of the Iowa caucuses to become a serious contender for the presidency, pushing the same theme, interest in the show mushrooms. The interview series has now been sold to 15 countries and is attracting worldwide interest. Although corporate outrage is increasing George and David agree to carr

We're told that if we care about our health—or our planet—eliminating red meat from our diets is crucial. That beef is bad for us and cattle farming is horrible for the environment. But science says otherwise. Beef is framed as the most environmentally destructive and least healthy of meats. We're often told that the only solution is to reduce or quit red meat entirely. But despite what anti-meat groups, vegan celebrities, and some health experts say, plant-based agriculture is far from a perfect solution. In Sacred Cow, registered dietitian Diana Rodgers and former research biochemist and New York Times bestselling author Robb Wolf explore the quandaries we face in raising and eating animals—focusing on the largest (and most maligned) of farmed animals, the cow. Taking a critical look at the assumptions and misinformation about meat, Sacred Cow points out the flaws in our current food system and in the proposed "solutions." Inside, Rodgers and Wolf reveal contrarian but science-based findings, such as: • Meat and animal fat are essential for our bodies. • A sustainable food system cannot exist without animals. • A vegan diet may destroy more life than sustainable cattle farming. • Regenerative cattle ranching is one of our best tools at mitigating climate change. You'll also find practical guidance on how to support sustainable farms and a 30-day challenge to help you transition to a healthful and conscientious diet. With scientific rigor, deep compassion, and wit, Rodgers and Wolf argue unequivocally that meat (done right) should have a place on the table. It's not the cow, it's the how!

Sacred Cows written by Danielle Teller and has been published by Diversion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-01 with Family & Relationships categories.

A husband-and-wife doctor team offers fresh and startling perspective on one of our most cherished and misunderstood institutions. Drs. Astro and Danielle Teller know better than most that finding the right partner in life doesn’t always happen the first time around. Through their own divorces they learned how widely held cultural assumptions and misinformation that nobody thinks to question—what they refer to as “sacred cows”—create unnecessary heartache for people who are already suffering through a terrible time. Do you think, for example, that the divorce rate in the United States is rising? Or that children are harmed by divorce? Most people do, but it turns out that neither of these notions is supported by the data. Combining the rigor that has established them as leaders in their respective fields along with a dose of good-natured humor, the Tellers ask readers to take a fresh look at seven common sacred cows: the Holy Cow, the Expert Cow, the Selfish Cow, the Defective Cow, the Innocent Victim Cow, the One True Cow, and the Other Cow. This is not a book that is “for” marriage or “for” divorce, but “for” the freedom to decide how to live most honestly and happily either as part of a couple or a single person.

Jha argues against the historical sanctity of the cow in India, in an illuminating response to the prevailing attitudes about beef that have been fiercely supported by the current Hindu right-wing government and the fundamentalist groups backing it.

"Teams Create the Best Solutions." BANG. "Always Trust Your Research." BANG. "It's Okay to Put Up with Jerks, If They're Talented." BANG. When you think about it, there are a lot of Sacred Cows grazing lazily in the halls of corporate America. And we think it's time someone shot them. Dead. Don't get us wrong. While the authors have nothing against cows in general (they love steak), they do have a problem with Sacred Cows. Blindly doing things because . . . well . . . that's the way they've always been done. Formulas may be comforting, but they rarely work in the real world. This is the funniest--and truest--business book you'll ever read. Not only do the authors demonstrate how to identify and kill the Sacred Cows in your workplace, they also reveal brilliant alternatives that will put your career in overdrive and help make your business more profitable, innovative, and happy. From branding ("Branding Is Expensive." BANG.) to leadership ("Follow the Leader." BANG.) to hiring ("Only Hire Someone Who Has Done the Job Before." BANG.) no Sacred Cow is left standing. Oh, and here's another Sacred Cow of business books: "No one reads flap copy." BANG!
