We have just realized how important allies really were, no more mopping floors and working in the auto factories. We were going to be business owners, and no one could imagine what was in store for us--the burning down of my brother's nightclub, a fight for my life, and my mother hanging on for dear life as my brother's nightclub went up in flames. The opening of my photo lab was the biggest photo finishing plant the Kodak I've ever seen; that was owned by a Black man, hundreds of accounts from Los Angeles to Beverly Hills, but the robbers didn't care. The police could not protect me; my employee respects life, going to work every day. This was the fight of my life; could you imagine coming to work finding your mother beat down in the store? I had to defend myself and my employees; it was a tale. Was it worth it? The dead bodies in the alley, my wife having no idea of what I was going through every day. My kids did not care; they only saw that I was never there. Get the insight of what it meant to be a Black business owner in the sixties. Everyone talked about a Black business owner getting a free ride with business loans from the SBA, but they never knew the truth. I still wake up at night in cold sweats, thinking about what I have been through. Was it all worth it?

This study closely analyzes key works by five pivotal playwrights: Sidney Kingsley, Arthur Miller, David Mamet, August Wilson, and Suzan-Lori Parks, in a comparison of the treatment of money in a range of American plays from the Great Depression to the early twenty-first century. Money emerges as a site of anxieties regarding the relation of signs to the real: a “monstrous” substance that seems to breed itself from itself; a dangerous abstraction that claims for itself a “hard” reality, transforming lived reality into an abstraction. At the same time, money’s self-generating properties have made it a serviceable metaphor for the American ideal of “self-making”; money’s ability to exchange means for ends, abstract for concrete, representation for real, has made it an emblem of our postmodern condition. Money has been conceived as a malevolent force robbing us of our natural relation to the world and to ourselves, and as an empowering one with which we may remake this relation. This ambivalence about money constitutes an important animating tension of American drama. Furthermore, anxieties surrounding money resemble in important ways anxieties surrounding theatre, and the plays’ treatment of money reveals interesting tensions between a persistent American dramatic realism and naturalism, and a philosophical and aesthetic postmodernism.

Race in the Jury Box focuses on the racially unrepresentative jury as one of the remaining barriers to racial equality and a recurring source of controversy in American life. Because members of minority groups remain underrepresented on juries, various communities have tried race-conscious jury selection, termed "affirmative jury selection." The authors argue that affirmative jury selection can insure fairness, verdict legitimization, and public confidence in the justice system. This book offers a critical analysis and systematic examination of possible applications of race-based jury selection, examining the public perception of these measures and their constitutionality. The authors make use of court cases, their own experiences as jury consultants, and jury research, as well as statistical surveys and analysis. The work concludes with the presentation of four strategies for affirmative jury selection.
