AI is already part of our lives even though we might not realise it. It is in our phones, filtering spam, identifying Facebook friends, and classifying our images on Instagram. It is in our homes in the form of Siri, Alexa and other AI assistants. It is in our cars and our planes. AI is literally everywhere. Artworks generated by AI have won international prizes, and have been sold at auction. But what does AI mean for the world of design? This issue of AD explores the nature of AI, and considers its potential for architecture. But this is no idle speculation. Architects have already started using AI for architectural design and fabrication. Yet – astonishingly – there has been almost no debate about AI within the discipline of architecture so far. Surely, nothing can be more important for the profession of architecture right now. The issue looks at all aspects of AI: its potential to assist architects in designing buildings so that it becomes a form of ‘augmented intelligence’; its capacity to design buildings on its own; and whether AI might open up an extraordinary new chapter in architectural design. Contributors: Refik Anadol; Daniel Bolojan; Alexa Carlson; Sofia Crespo and Feileacan McCormick; Gabriel Esquivel, Jean Jaminet and Shane Bugni; Behnaz Farahi; Theodoros Galanos and Angelos Chronis; Eduard Haiman; Wanyu He; Damjan Jovanovic and Lidija Kljakovic; Immanuel Koh; Maria Kuptsova; Sandra Manninger; Lev Manovich; Achim Menges and Thomas Wortmann; Wolf dPrix, Karolin Schmidbaur and Efilena Baseta; M Casey Rehm; and Hao Zheng and Masoud Akbarzadeh. Featured architects: Alisa Andrasek, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Lifeforms.io, Nonstandardstudio,SPAN, Kyle Steinfeld, Studio Kinch and Xkool Technology.

"In the 21st century, the use of artificial intelligence has expanded outside of the fields ofscience and technology and into the field of the creative arts. The use of generative AI hasdivided artists since its emergence. However, artists willing to embrace new technology in theirpractice have had positive results incorporating AI technology into their work. Refik Anadol, aself-proclaimed AI and “data artist”, incorporates artificial intelligence into his large-scale AIinstallations. Anadol’s series Machine Hallucinations, uses a generative adversarial network withan adaptive discriminator and an original latent space browser program in order to transform amassive visual dataset into what the artist refers to as a “data painting”: a form of AI artwork.Using Anadol’s series as a case study, this dissertation will explore the idea of AI-generatedartwork becoming its own medium of art. The notions of creativity and originality are critical inthe discourse of AI-generated artwork. The scientific and artistic communities have differentnotions of what it means to be creative. Whether or not the artist or the machine is responsiblefor the aspect of originality in an AI-generative work relies heavily on the intention of theartwork and the agency of the author. This question of originality is further exacerbated by theinability to copyright AI-generated work in most countries due to a lack of judicial precedent onthe topic. In another manner, the perception of AI by the general public stands to also be adecisive factor in AI becoming a recognized medium of art. However, the critical issues in thediscourse of AI becoming its own medium, such as image appropriation, the reliance oncomputer technology, and the notion of creativity, bear some resemblance to the issues faced bythe mixed-media, photography, and video mediums in their emergence. This dissertation aims toaddress these critical issues that stand in the way of AI becoming a recognized medium of art." -- Prodided by the Author.

For those in a hurry, this: - To align an AI’s goals with our own, we must build-in alignment from the start. - To keep an AI honest, we must build-in honesty from the start. - To get an AI to understand anything, we must invest it with something of what it’s like to be conscious. In this book, a theory of consciousness is cast into an AI architecture that allows interventions in concept formation by design. For the rest of you, who enjoy reading and mulling things over, this: Can a computing device appreciate the smell of coffee on a Sunday morning, or contemplate the Earth as seen from the Moon, or worry about inflation and the price of fuel? Not without being conscious and understanding the world. And one can't be done without the other, surely? In this book, Carter Blakelaw uses a theory of what makes us conscious to present a machine that will genuinely think for itself. Not only that, but once he has his machine, he looks at how to ensure its interests align with our own, and how to keep it honest and true (alignment and hallucinations being two of the biggest issues in AI). Discover what he discovers about the machine, about our world, and about us.

Have you ever seen something that wasn't really there? Heard someone call your name in an empty house? Sensed someone following you and turned around to find nothing? Hallucinations don't belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. In some conditions, hallucinations can lead to religious epiphanies or even the feeling of leaving one's own body. Humans have always sought such life-changing visions, and for thousands of years have used hallucinogenic compounds to achieve them. In Hallucinations, with his usual elegance, curiosity, and compassion, Dr Oliver Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and of his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture's folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all, a vital part of the human condition.

What Is Artificial Intelligence Safety Artificial intelligence (AI) safety is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the prevention of accidents, abuse, and other potentially negative outcomes that could be caused by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. It comprises machine ethics and AI alignment, both of which attempt to make AI systems moral and beneficial, while AI safety encompasses technical concerns such monitoring systems for hazards and making them extremely reliable. Both of these aspects aim to make AI systems more trustworthy and beneficial. In addition to AI research, it entails the development of standards and guidelines that prioritize safety. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: AI safety Chapter 2: Machine learning Chapter 3: Artificial general intelligence Chapter 4: Applications of artificial intelligence Chapter 5: Adversarial machine learning Chapter 6: Existential risk from artificial general intelligence Chapter 7: AI alignment Chapter 8: Explainable artificial intelligence Chapter 9: Neuro-symbolic AI Chapter 10: Hallucination (artificial intelligence) (II) Answering the public top questions about artificial intelligence safety. (III) Real world examples for the usage of artificial intelligence safety in many fields. (IV) 17 appendices to explain, briefly, 266 emerging technologies in each industry to have 360-degree full understanding of artificial intelligence safety' technologies. How machine and computer vision produces contemporary images. Although often considered to be a fault or a glitch in the system, the event of hallucination is central to the models of image production generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Through mining the latent space of computer vision, Trevor Paglen’s series Adversarially Evolved Hallucinations (2017–ongoing) reveals this phantasmal and hallucinatory domain. In the conversation included in this volume, he discusses how we can think from within these opaque structures and, in turn, questions the frequently inflated claims made on behalf of automated image-production systems. In an accompanying essay, Anthony Downey explores the uncanny realm of algorithmically induced images and proposes that AI, through its generative modeling of the world, invariably estranges us from the present and the future.
