Since Oxford University Press's publication in 2000 of Michael Emerson and Christian Smith's groundbreaking study, Divided by Faith (DBF), research on racialized religion has burgeoned in a variety of disciplines in response to and in conversation with DBF. This conversation has moved outsideof sociological circles; historians, theologians, and philosophers have also engaged the central tenets of DBF for the purpose of contextualizing, substantiating, and in some cases, contesting the book's findings. In a poll published in January 2012, nearly 70% of evangelical churches professed adesire to be racially and culturally diverse. Currently, only around 8% of them have achieved this multiracial status. To an unprecedented degree, evangelical churches in the United States are trying to overcome the deep racial divides that persist in their congregations. Not surprisingly, many of these evangelicals have turned to DBF for solutions. The essays in Christians and the Color Line complicate the researchfindings of Emerson and Smith's study and explore new areas of research that have opened in the years since DBF's publication. The book is split into two sections. The chapters in the first section consider the history of American evangelicalism and race as portrayed in DBF. In the second sectionthe authors pick up where DBF left off, and discuss how American churches could ameliorate the problem of race in their congregations while also identifying problems that can arise from such attempted amelioration.

When tragedy strikes too close to home, can three broken people help each other heal? Darcy Collins is living her dream of being a wife and, hopefully soon, a mother. But when her husband leaves on the night of their first-year anniversary to help a victim of domestic abuse, her dream begins to shatter. She wakes the next morning to police knocking on her door, and the search for her missing husband begins. Steve Parnell, recently returned from his service in the Navy, is surprised to hear his sister, Cindy, is married. He's even more shocked to see her name on the news as a suspect, along with her husband, in the kidnapping of Dr. Collins. He quickly returns to Charleston to find out all he can about the investigation. It's there he meets Darcy. On impulse, Darcy offers that Steve can stay with her until the investigation is over, and an awkward friendship is formed. The one bright spot in the midst of their worry is Hope, a young girl recently orphaned, whom Darcy agrees to foster. As the investigation drags on, Steve, Darcy, and Hope grow closer together, bonded by their shared grief. Meanwhile, questions and fears abound. Is Darcy's husband still alive? Could Cindy really be involved in the kidnapping, or is she, too, a victim? Will Darcy be able to keep Hope if her husband doesn't return? Where is God when hope seems so far away?

Why Can T There Be Peace In The World written by Pat Fosarelli and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-17 with Religion categories.

Over a period of fifteen years, Johns Hopkins pediatrician Pat Fosarelli, MD, a professor at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute, surveyed approximately 9,000 children, adolescents, and teens about their understand of God. This book reveals their answers to a single query: “If you could ask God a question, what would that question be?” The candid, unvarnished responses Fosarelli received from this racially and socioeconomically diverse group are hardly the precious, saccharine content of Hallmark cards. They are illuminating, profound, curious, and weighty, revealing how these children understand themselves and their existence. Some of their responses focus on the nature of God (“Who are God’s parents?”); others focus on themselves (“Why can’t friendships last forever?) and people around them (“Why are some people poor?”); some responses address suffering (“Why do people die?”) and creation (“Why do some animals hurt people?”) and heaven (“Will I see my mother?”). Fosarelli guides readers through children’s stages of development, explaining how these stages correlate with the content and sophistication of their questions, and suggesting how parents and teachers can respond most effectively to questions children may ask about God. In the final chapter she explores how these children’s questions can help parents, teachers, and other child/youth professionals better understand the dreams, concerns, anxieties, wishes, and fears of young people today.
