Das Deutsche Warenbuch und die Deutsche Warenkunde sowie Ausstellungen im Kaufhaus Wertheim werden als Inszenierungsstrategien vorgestellt, die den Wert der Ware und ihre Zugehörigkeit zu bestimmten Lebensstilen vermitteln. Ebenfalls wird das Zusammenspiel zwischen Produkt und Konsum, Design als Verkaufsstrategie sowie die Rolle von Werbeveranstaltungen und die erste Kunststoffpräsentation auf der New Yorker Weltausstellung 1939 analysiert. Die Auflösung der traditionellen Gebundenheiten in der BRD der 1950er Jahre machte "Hausrat aus Plastic" zu einem Leitmotiv für einen neuen Lebensstil.
