The Reason Why The Colored American Is Not In The World S Columbian Exposition written by Ida B. Wells-Barnett and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with African Americans categories.

Expressly intended to demonstrate America's national progress toward utopia, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago pointedly excluded the contributions of African Americans. For them, being left outside the gates of the "White City" merely underscored a more general exclusion from America's bright future. Exhibits at the fair were controlled by all-white committees, and those that acknowledged African Americans at all, such as the famous Aunt Jemima pancake exhibit, ridiculed and denigrated them. Many African Americans saw the racist policies of the World's Columbian Exposition as mirroring, framing, and reinforcing the larger horrors confronting blacks throughout the United States, where white supremacy meant segregation, second-class citizenship, and sometimes mob violence and lynching. In response to the politics of exclusion that governed the fair, and of its larger implications, several prominent African Americans resolved to publish a pamphlet that would catalog the achievements of African Americans since the abolition of slavery while articulating the persistent political economy of apartheid in the American South. The authors of this remarkable document included the antilynching crusader Ida B. Wells, the former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, the educator Irvine Garland Penn, and the lawyer and newspaper publisher Ferdinand L. Barnett. An eloquent statement of protest and pride, The Reason Why the Colored American Is Not in the World's Columbian Exposition reminds us that struggles over cultural representation are nothing new in American life. Robert Rydell's introduction provides insight into the sometimes conflicting strategies employed by African Americans as they strove to represent themselves at a cultural event that was widely regarded as a defining moment in American history.

Why Does The World Exist written by Jim Holt and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-16 with Philosophy categories.

The Washington Post Notable Non-Fiction of 2013 “I can imagine few more enjoyable ways of thinking than to read this book.”—Sarah Bakewell, New York Times Book Review, front-page review Tackling the “darkest question in all of philosophy” with “raffish erudition” (Dwight Garner, New York Times), author Jim Holt explores the greatest metaphysical mystery of all: why is there something rather than nothing? This runaway bestseller, which has captured the imagination of critics and the public alike, traces our latest efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. Holt adopts the role of cosmological detective, traveling the globe to interview a host of celebrated scientists, philosophers, and writers, “testing the contentions of one against the theories of the other” (Jeremy Bernstein, Wall Street Journal). As he interrogates his list of ontological culprits, the brilliant yet slyly humorous Holt contends that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to God versus the Big Bang. This “deft and consuming” (David Ulin, Los Angeles Times) narrative humanizes the profound questions of meaning and existence it confronts.

Eia and Whhat had spent as long as they could remember trying to figure out why in the world they were here in the world. One day, they got so sick of wondering that they hopped onto a rickety raft and set sail across the ocean in search of answers. Finally, after many moon-suns had passed, Whhat spotted an island. After touring The Island of Fun, they were satisfied that the meaning of life was to have fun. Resolved, they returned to their raft and headed home. But on the way, they got lost. Join Eia and Whhat as they tour the islands of Fun, Progress, Love, Creation, Nothing, Now, Power, Destruction, Me, and Healing, and have a go at creating your own island too, as you and your family muse over the various meanings of life. Are there more meanings, more islands? Could we belong to more than one island? Do we go to different islands at different times in our life? How should we live life and why? For this book, the author, Clare-Rose Trevelyan, invited nine artists to each create a different island, its history, geography and people: Cassandra King (The Island of Fun), Danica Chappell (Progress), Honor Bradbeer (Love), María Medem Pérez (Creation), Antoine Nogueira (Nothing), Emil Toonen (Now), Patrick Sluiter (Power), Alexander Esenarro Santafe (Destruction), Yongho Moon (Me and Healing). Why in the World Are We Here? is part of the Young Philosophers Series dedicated to listening to and valuing children as natural philosophers. These unconventional and creative books are designed to get children's imaginations flowing. HOW TO USE THIS BOOK 1. Read the story and keep in mind questions about the meaning of your life, what matters to you and exactly how you'd like to live your own life. 2. Choose your favourite island as if you yourself were paddling around a huge LAKE in a theme park and choosing where you would live of all the places. Keep all your thoughts in a journal. 3. Go to the back of the book to make your own island, complete with law, currency, a motto, flag and a historic story of how your island came to be. 4. Create as many islands or places within your island as you like, and you perhaps may start to wonder about who in your life would live on which island, or wonder about if life itself has any meaning at all, or if indeed perhaps you are to make up your own meaning?

Why Can T There Be Peace In The World written by Pat Fosarelli and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-17 with Religion categories.

Over a period of fifteen years, Johns Hopkins pediatrician Pat Fosarelli, MD, a professor at St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute, surveyed approximately 9,000 children, adolescents, and teens about their understand of God. This book reveals their answers to a single query: “If you could ask God a question, what would that question be?” The candid, unvarnished responses Fosarelli received from this racially and socioeconomically diverse group are hardly the precious, saccharine content of Hallmark cards. They are illuminating, profound, curious, and weighty, revealing how these children understand themselves and their existence. Some of their responses focus on the nature of God (“Who are God’s parents?”); others focus on themselves (“Why can’t friendships last forever?) and people around them (“Why are some people poor?”); some responses address suffering (“Why do people die?”) and creation (“Why do some animals hurt people?”) and heaven (“Will I see my mother?”). Fosarelli guides readers through children’s stages of development, explaining how these stages correlate with the content and sophistication of their questions, and suggesting how parents and teachers can respond most effectively to questions children may ask about God. In the final chapter she explores how these children’s questions can help parents, teachers, and other child/youth professionals better understand the dreams, concerns, anxieties, wishes, and fears of young people today.
