Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Communications - Ethics in the Media, grade: 3.3, , language: English, abstract: This paper explores the importance of privacy in social media and the decision between owning private and public social media accounts. Social media refers to forms of communications that employ the use of computer and mobile technology which allows users to create virtual communities. In recent years social media has presented one of the best platforms where friends, colleagues, and family share unforgettable moments. Social media users create platforms through their devices where other users can share their experiences, participate in discussions, and establish networks. This is a book about what privacy is and why it matters. Governments and companies keep telling us that Privacy is Dead, but they are wrong. Privacy is about more than just whether our information is collected. It's about human and social power in our digital society. And in that society, that's pretty much everything we do, from GPS mapping to texting to voting to treating disease. We need to realize that privacy is up for grabs, and we need to craft rules to protect our hard-won, but fragile human values like identity, freedom, consumer protection, and trust.

Privacy is one of the most urgent issues associated with information technology and digital media. This book claims that what people really care about when they complain and protest that privacy has been violated is not the act of sharing information itself—most people understand that this is crucial to social life —but the inappropriate, improper sharing of information. Arguing that privacy concerns should not be limited solely to concern about control over personal information, Helen Nissenbaum counters that information ought to be distributed and protected according to norms governing distinct social contexts—whether it be workplace, health care, schools, or among family and friends. She warns that basic distinctions between public and private, informing many current privacy policies, in fact obscure more than they clarify. In truth, contemporary information systems should alarm us only when they function without regard for social norms and values, and thereby weaken the fabric of social life.

Social networks, particularly public ones, have become part of the fabric of how we communicate and collaborate as a society. With value from micro-level personal networking to macro-level outreach, social networking has become pervasive in people’s lives and is now becoming a significant driving force in business. These new platforms have provided new approaches to many critical enterprise functions, including identifying, communicating, and gathering feedback with customers (e.g., Facebook, Ning); locating expertise (e.g., LinkedIn); providing new communication platforms (e.g., Twitter); and collaborating with a community, small or large (e.g., wikis). However, many organizations have stayed away from potential benefits of social networks because of the significant risks associated with them. This book will help an organization understand the risks present in social networks and provide a framework covering policy, training and technology to address those concerns and mitigate the risks presented to leverage social media in their organization. The book also acknowledges that many organizations have already exposed themselves to more risk than they think from social networking and offers strategies for "dialing it back" to retake control. Defines an organization's goals for social networking Presents the risks present in social networking and how to mitigate them Explains how to maintain continuous social networking security

Social Networking sites (SNS) are becoming ever more prevalent both on the internet and in society. With news programs on TV reporting on social media statistics and posts, and protesters organizing rallies and spreading their messages using social media - SNS are becoming ever more important within society. With so much of the world population using SNS in one form or another, users with malicious intent are also using SNS as a means of learning sensitive individual information and thereby breaching individual privacy. A malicious data miner can use data mining techniques in order to learn sensitive information of a social networking site user that the user did not disclose. We present technical solutions to protect privacy of a social networking site user from a breach of privacy originating from a malicious data miner. We propose a solution or service that could be owned and operated by a social networking site service provider such as Facebook, which will report to the user about any possible privacy compromise for that user. The solution provides the list of information available in the users' profile that should be suppressed, to protect a possible privacy breach. We propose two novel approaches for the solution which suggests to the user a list of necessary suppressions. We assume that our solution will be implemented in an app or service that is applied by the social networking site service provider. Our solutions are experimentally compared with a suppression approach that simulates a user randomly suppressing attributes to achieve privacy. Our experimental results indicate the usefulness of the proposed approaches in terms of preserving the maximum usability (i.e the least number of suppressions) and the maximum protection of privacy.
