Throughout the world one can find evidence of the love people have for Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom many know as the Savior of the world. From magnificent cathedrals to small roadside shrines where the faithful followers of Mary leave flowers and prayers, the devotion to Mary is evident. Rosaries can be seen in the hands of her followers in nearly every continent, and the number of people who seek her intercession on their behalf continues to grow. Where did this love for the mother of Jesus Christ begin? The Gospel of Luke, chapter 1, records Marys visit to her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth addresses Mary as blessed among women. Mary states, All generations will count me blessed, because she was chosen by God to bear the long-awaited, prophesied Messiah, the Savior of the world. These two statements point to recognition of the singular blessing God gave to this one woman among all the women who ever lived: she would bear the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who would be born to a virgin, Mary, and would not have an earthly fatherjust as God had prophesied in Genesis 3:15. Yet, the recognition of Gods blessing on Marythat He chose her to bear His only begotten Songoes beyond mere acknowledgment in the hearts and actions of those who adore her.

The Virgin Mary is more than just a bit player in the Christmas Pageant. However, if you are indisposed towards the Virgin Mary, perhaps no amount of evidence will change your mind. After all, any number of people have used Sacred Scripture devise any number of different theological systems, each internally coherent and with great explanatory power. Despite this, one of the unique things about human consciousness is our ability to step outside ourselves, to see things from another perspective, and to change our minds. I ask you to examine the evidence and to examine the views of people you might normally discard out of hand. If you make the effort, even if you remain unconvinced, you will nonetheless find the process spiritually rewarding.

Protestants tend to think of the Virgin Mary as nothing more than a bit player in the first Christmas pageant; as a young Jewish peasant girl who quickly fades into the background of the Gospel story; as an incidental participant in the incarnation. Many see Mary as an example of Christian obedience and womanly submission, and see no evidence in the scriptures to convince them otherwise. I know this, because this is how I was brought up in the faith. And yet, after years of study, and based on Sacred Scripture, I have been forced to accept certain Marian doctrines that initially made me uncomfortable. Since originality in theological matters is something to be avoided, I proudly state that you will find nothing original in this book. The most I can claim is some originality in the way the information is presented. I wrote the book I have been unable to find, and for the Protestant I once was - and in many ways, still remain. Since I wrote this book with the Protestant in mind, I attempt to place the Virgin Mary within a larger theological context and illuminate some of the more troubling Mariological doctrines. My hope is that the record of my exploration of Marian doctrine will be interesting, and that my attempt at providing answers to the important Marian questions will be useful. I acknowledge that although the Marian questions deserve answers, the attempt to provide the answers is problematic; and, for those whose minds are already made up, the attempt is likely futile. I therefore ask you to examine the Sacred Scriptures with an open mind, to see them through another person's eyes, and to examine the views of people you might normally discard out of hand. If you do this, even if you remain unconvinced, you will find the process spiritually rewarding.

A major new work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest sacred documents of Judaism, which reveals their surprising connections to early Christianity. “A luminous treatment of a fascinating subject! Highly recommended!”—Scott Hahn, author of The Fourth Cup From award-winning scholar John Bergsma comes an intriguing book that reveals new insights on the Essenes, a radical Jewish community predating Christianity, whose existence, beliefs, and practices are often overlooked in the annuls of history. Bergsma reveals how this Jewish sect directly influenced the beliefs, sacraments, and practices of early Christianity and offers new information on how Christians lived their lives, worshipped, and eventually went on to influence the Roman Empire and Western civilization. Looking to Hebrew scripture and Jewish tradition, Bergsma helps to further explain how a simple Jewish peasant could go on to inspire a religion and a philosophy that still resonates 2,000 years later. In this enriching and exciting exploration, Bergsma demonstrates how the Dead Sea Scrolls—the world's greatest modern archaeological discovery—can shed light on the Church as a sacred society that offered hope, redemption, and salvation to its member. Ultimately, these mysterious writings are a time machine that can transport us back to the ancient world, deepen our appreciation of Scripture, and strengthen our understanding of the Christian faith. “An accessible introduction . . . This is a handy entry point for readers unfamiliar with Essenes or those interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls.”—Publishers Weekly

Walking With Mary written by Edward Sri and has been published by Image this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-10 with Religion categories.

Mary appears only a few times in the Bible, but those few passages come at crucial moments. Catholics believe that Mary is the ever-virgin Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth. But she also was a human being--a woman who made a journey of faith through various trials and uncertainties and endured her share of suffering. Even with her unique graces and vocation, Mary remains a woman we can relate to and from whom we have much to learn. In Walking with Mary, Edward Sri looks at the crucial passages in the Bible concerning Mary and offers insight about the Blessed Mother's faith and devotion that we can apply in our daily lives. We follow her step-by-step through the New Testament account of her life, reflecting on what the Scriptures tell us about how she responded to the dramatic events unfolding around her. “This book is the fruit of my personal journey of studying Mary through the Scriptures, from her initial calling in Nazareth to her painful experience at the cross,” writes Edward Sri “It is intended to be a highly readable, accessible work that draws on wisdom from the Catholic tradition, recent popes, and biblical scholars of a variety of perspectives and traditions. With the riches of these insights, we will ponder what her journey of faith may have been like in order to draw out spiritual lessons for our own walk with God.” He add, “It is my hope, therefore, that whether you are of a Catholic, Protestant, or other faith background, this book may help you to know, understand, and love Mary more, and that it may inspire you to walk in her footsteps as a faithful disciple of the Lord in your own pilgrimage of faith.”

After telling Mary that she would be a virgin who gives birth to God’s son, the angel Gabrielle mentions that Mary’s older relative Elizabeth is also having a miraculous pregnancy. The Bible tells us that Mary immediately went to visit Elizabeth. We can only speculate as to why Mary did not stay home with her own mother, but it could be because Mary knew she needed to talk to another woman who could relate to and understand her situation—she needed a Spiritual Mother.
