The scene is set by the presentation of different fundamental perspectives on the problem of stigma and discrimination by researchers, consumers, families, and human rights experts. Current knowledge and practice used in reducing stigma are then described, with information on the programmes adopted across the world and their utility, feasibility, and effectiveness. The core of the volume comprises descriptions of new approaches and innovative programmes specifically designed to overcome stigma and discrimination. In the closing part of the book, the editors – all respected experts in the field – summarize some of the most important evidence- and experience-based recommendations for future action to successfully rewrite the long and burdensome ‘story’ of mental illness stigma and discrimination.

This book offers a concise, readable, research-grounded synthesis of the special concerns mental health and other helping professionals need to address when working with men today, and explains a wealth of effective gender-specific approaches to assessment and intervention that result in more successful outcomes for male clients. Many more women than men seek counseling and therapy, and to some extent standard services have evolved in response to female styles of communicating and problem-solving. Practitioners frequently feel frustrated and baffled by their male clients because they seem unresponsive to treatment approaches that work so well for women. But many men benefit from therapy when practitioners understand male socialization and the ways men communicate and problem-solve. Too many men today are doing badly and are in real need of help. Almost half of America's male children grow up in single parent homes headed by mothers, where they seldom have male mentors or role models. Fewer men than women attend or graduate from college, and increasing levels of binge drinking and date rape on campuses paint a discouraging picture of men on campus. Male violence continues to be a serious problem in many American communities, with male youth violence continuing at epidemic levels. Men die younger than women overall and in much higher proportions from suicide, homicide, and cirrhosis of the liver.

The Book that Sparked a National Conversation A Barack Obama 2024 Summer Reading Selection An Economist Best Book of 2022 A New Yorker Best Book of 2022 Boys and men are struggling. Profound economic and social changes of recent decades have many losing ground in the classroom, the workplace, and in the family. While the lives of women have changed, the lives of many men have remained the same or even worsened. In this widely praised book, Richard Reeves, father of three sons, a journalist, and now the president of the American Institute for Boys and Men, tackles the complex and urgent crisis of boyhood and manhood. He argues that our attitudes, our institutions, and our laws have failed to keep up. Conservative and progressive politicians, mired in their own ideological warfare, fail to provide thoughtful solutions. Reeves looks at the structural challenges that face boys and men and offers fresh and innovative solutions that turn the page on the corrosive narrative that plagues this issue. Of Boys and Men argues that helping the other half of society does not mean giving up on the ideal of gender equality.

“I can unequivocally say that this is the book every man needs.” —Mark Groves, human connection specialist and founder of Create The Love Suck it up. Stuff it down. Pour a bottle of whiskey over the top. Rinse and repeat until sufficiently numbed. This is the step-by-step doctrine men are taught. Men have traded in their internal leadership, sovereignty, and even masculinity for comfort, validation, and an escape from the mundane boardroom of their existence. Where is the modern-day strength training for the hearts and minds of men? In Men’s Work, ManTalks founder Connor Beaton offers the tactical, self-led guide men have been looking for. Here, he destigmatizes inner work by reframing it as a kind of psychological warrior training that many men can relate to and have been craving. Beaton walks you through a framework for facing the hidden and rejected aspects of yourself—factors that lead to self-sabotage, anxiety, and depression. Through real-life stories from men he’s worked with and guidance in practical, accessible exercises, he takes you on a three-part journey to uncover and free yourself from the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that hold you back. When you face off with those pieces in place, that’s when you’ll: • Live with clear purpose and direction • Build your skills to win at relationships • Gain better control of your anger • Learn how to regulate your mind, body, and emotions, even under stress and conflict • Become fearless and at peace with your journey Men’s Work focuses on the unique challenges that men with psychological and emotional wounds so often grapple with—while giving you the tools to heal and return to society in a way that is both empowering personally and beneficial for all. “The goal of this work is not only to become a better man,” says Beaton, “but a better participant in the collective enterprise of living. True freedom awaits.”

'BoyMum is one of the most thought-provoking books I've read as a parent' The Times BoyMum is about boys and young men - how we are raising them, and what it means to be a man-in-the-making in an era when #MeToo has challenged our tolerance for toxic masculinity, yet the pressure on young men to be 'masculine' has never been more intense. It is also a mother's perspective. Ruth Whippman is the proud/overwhelmed, feminist mother of three boys and her family life can be a daily confrontation with the triumph of nature over nurture. All too aware that her parenting today will shape the men her sons become tomorrow, she explores the expectations placed on boys - must boys be boys?; the messages we send girls but not boys (but they really need to hear too); boys in the classroom and boys online; incels; entitlement, sexual harassment and "cancel culture" and what radicalizes young men. Blending memoir with cultural analysis, and approaching her subject with wit, honesty and open-mindedness, this is a sympathetic investigation into where we are going wrong with raising boys, and how trying to change those patterns must be one of society's most urgent cultural projects. Praise for Ruth Whippman and The Pursuit of Happiness - "A whip-sharp British Bill Bryson" The Sunday Times - "Ruth Whippman is whip-smart, her writing nothing short of genius" Huffington Post - The Pursuit of Happiness was a New York Post Best Book of 2016, a New York Times Editors' Choice and Paperback Row pick, one of Newsweek's 'Nine Books to Change the Way You Think in 2016', a Sunday Times top summer read and a Daily Mail 'Must Read'. - Ruth Whippman manages the trick of being funny about what is, deep down, a serious problem: the American quest for happiness isn't working" Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks - "I LOVED this book. I found it SO WELL WRITTEN, so witty and funny and reading it I was often envious of Ruth Whippman's facility with language. It was a hugely engaging read, accessible and so relevant... I've been quite evangelical about it." Marian Keyes, best-selling author of Grown Ups

Progress towards gender parity is hindered by unconscious ways that hypermasculinity is valorized at a symbolic level. By deconstructing how social and textual phenomena as well as social structures contribute to gender performativity, we can elucidate hard-to-discern patterns that perpetuate hegemonic masculinity. The subliminal elevation of symbols of hypermasculinity excludes both women and non-gender conforming men. By delving into these symbolic meanings that operate subliminally, we can more effectively debunk beliefs that “real men” fall within narrow parameters of masculinity. There remains much to explore in terms of hidden pressures for men to constrain their expression of emotions, project an appearance of hardness, and equate violence with power, to name just a few persistent facets of toxic masculinity. While abstract forms of inculcating hypermasculinity are difficult to identify, interrogating their role in masculine performativity will result in a more comprehensive understanding of impediments to gender equality.
