The modern Pentecostal movement has been studied many times in relation to its theological and sociological background. Previous studies, however, have not focused on the disctinctive doctrine of that movement: the teaching that speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Within a very short time of its proposal, acceptance of this doctrine was so widespread as to become the hallmark of the movement. Insistence on such a doctrine led to many being asked to leave their denominations, and thus to the founding of other denominations. This book attempts to answer the question: "Why?" And specifically: "Why Tongues?"

Have you ever wondered why your prayer language doesn’t sound like real words? And why is it so repetitive? Why does it usually start with the same few words or syllables? Maybe you’ve asked those questions at times. We’ve asked the same questions—and quite a few others—regarding the gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues. Then we sought the Lord for understanding of these gifts and did our best to operate in them faithfully. He gave us many insights and answers, and then brought it all together in a book. That was something we never really planned. It just sort of happened. We aren’t megachurch pastors. We don’t lead multi-national ministries. But we did have a calling from the Lord to write a book and spread a message. What exactly is that message? Speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues are powerful gifts with practical use for everyday people like us. When people operate in these gifts, God blesses the person operating in the gift, but He also blesses the people around them. Other Questions We Explore in the Book: What does speaking in tongues feel like emotionally? What is the purpose of speaking in tongues? What are the benefits? How does the gift of interpretation work? Are biblical tongues earthly languages, or heavenly languages? Or both? We invite you to explore these questions with us, as you read through our book. Between Tongues takes the subject of performance translation in a completely new direction. While the topic is often discussed in relation to the translation of dramatic texts, such as Shakespeare in Malay, the authors in this collection examine presentations of traditional and contemporary works in Asia in their original languages before audiences who do not share that language. They also discuss translation as a phenomenon inherent to much performance in Asia, particularly in multilingual settings.

Part 1 considers recent scholarly studies of "inspired speech" in the ancient world where parallels have been alleged with the early Christian experience as recorded in the New testament. In Part 2 both the Lucan and Pauline references to "tongues" are considered in detail with a view to discerning the significance of the phenomenon for the church its its mission and worship. In the light of this, practical implications are drawn for the church in the 21st century.

For years the body of Christ has been taught--incorrectly--that the baptism in the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues ended with the early-church apostles. Yet James T. Elam Jr. sets forth in this new book that if we wish to become bold, empowered witnesses who bring glory to God and thwart the devil, then having the Holy Spirit’s power and speaking in tongues is as vital today as it was on the Day of Pentecost. He shows why tongues is God’s supernatural way for you to: · Walk in love. · Pray for God’s perfect will in your life. · Receive power to break every assignment of the devil. · And much more. James explains the benefits of this powerful, life-changing gift in simple terms, while calling all believers to be filled and empowered for greater service.
