Recognizing that some early endings are unavoidable, the author maintains that many mentor-mentee relationships quickly dissolve due to factors that may be avoidable, such as disappointment and dissatisfaction with the relationship. Findings from a range of research studies are offered. Higher levels of program support may be required for matches made with older youth and those with more complex problems. Early attention to expectations mentors and youth bring to the mentoring relationship is also cited, including discussion of ending the relationship appropriately. Training directed toward helping mentors identify some of their cultural and class-based values and beliefs and developing skills for effectively engaging in cross-cultural relationships with youth could be critical to the success of some mentoring relationships. Monitoring of matches and ongoing training for mentors are among the program practices associated with more positive youth outcomes, a practice that may also serve to reduce early endings. Regular contact with matches on a periodic basis may provide program staff the opportunity to identify difficulties as they arise and step in to provide assistance or to facilitate termination if necessary. Ongoing training may provide mentors with the chance to receive assistance with challenging situations and assist them with continued development of their skills as a mentor. By identifying and addressing common pitfalls in formal mentoring relationships, programs can better support mentors and youth in their efforts to build close, enduring, and growth-promoting relationships. The article is followed by suggestions on how practitioners can incorporate the research findings into mentoring programs and a list of additional resources. Youth mentoring programs must change in order to become truly effective. The world’s leading expert shows how. Youth mentoring is among the most popular forms of volunteering in the world. But does it work? Does mentoring actually help young people succeed? In Older and Wiser, mentoring expert Jean Rhodes draws on more than thirty years of empirical research to survey the state of the field. Her conclusion is sobering: there is little evidence that most programs—even renowned, trusted, and long-established ones—are effective. But there is also much reason for hope. Mentoring programs, Rhodes writes, do not focus on what young people need. Organizations typically prioritize building emotional bonds between mentors and mentees. But research makes clear that effective programs emphasize the development of specific social, emotional, and intellectual skills. Most mentoring programs are poorly suited to this effort because they rely overwhelmingly on volunteers, who rarely have the training necessary to teach these skills to young people. Moreover, the one-size-fits-all models of major mentoring organizations struggle to deal with the diverse backgrounds of mentees, the psychological effects of poverty on children, and increasingly hard limits to upward mobility in an unequal world. Given the acknowledgment that not all mentoring relationships are effective and, in some cases, they can do more harm than good, and recent expansion in size and number of formal youth mentoring programs, researchers have begun an exploration of predictors of enduring and beneficial matches. Although little research focuses on race and ethnicity issues among younger youth in formal mentoring programs, some research on the natural and formal mentoring relationships of late adolescent or college-aged ethnic minorities suggests that cultural differences seem to play a role in the expectation, attainment, and experience of mentoring. Ethnicity and race may play a role in the ways that mentors and mentees relate to each other. More specifically, the quality of mentoring relationships may be shaped by the way race-related issues are negotiated by mentor-mentee pairs. Cultural values may impact the types of mentors that are sought, the quality of the connection between mentor and mentee, and may influence level of initiative that results in miscommunication or misinterpretation of social cues by culturally unaware mentors. "The present qualitative, multiple-case study research (a) explored the relationship processes in youth mentoring relationships with children, mentors, and parents, and (b) explored the perceived impacts of participating in the mentoring relationship on children, mentors, and parents. This study combined the tenets of two current theoretical models of youth mentoring, namely, developmental (Rhodes, 2005) and systemic (Keller, 2005b), in order to obtain a holistic view of mentoring relationships. In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 child-mentor-parent triads participating in a formal, traditional mentoring programme, and whose relationships had been established for one or more years. A thematic cross-case analysis was carried out. Nine different themes relating to the system and another nine themes relating to perceived individual impacts emerged. The inter-relatedness of the system throughout the relationships and its impacts on individuals became apparent. Globally, mentoring relationships can provoke positive, life-altering changes in children, mentors, and parents, when placed in the context of a healthy system in which participants work in concert with each other, collaborating in the children's best interests. Participants addressed the complexities of maintaining this positive momentum, and many experienced difficulty adapting and negotiating the new roles they had to play. Misunderstandings on either side may have negative consequences and initiate a negative spiral that could take considerable effort to turn around. Caseworkers play a large role in helping participants maintain their roles and deffusing difficulties. The use of matched triads to explore both impacts and relationships in the mentoring process yielded important insights and indicated that multiple perspectives greatly contribute to the understanding of the field of youth mentoring." --
