A legendary blue diamond is the target, but Adam has bigger plans for Jess in this West End—set finale to Michelle Dayton’s Strange Tango series Dealing with prima donna theater people and his uncle Tony’s gang of thugs wasn’t quite how Adam pictured his first holiday season with Jess. Especially not now, when he’s made up his mind about things. Forever-type things. But it’s the job of a lifetime: Tony plans to steal the Bulgarian Blue, an enormous blue diamond allegedly owned by one of Britain’s most famously fickle directors. Choosing to stay in London with Adam over the holidays was a big step for Jess. Infiltrating the cast of their target’s West End production while Adam puts his role-playing experience to good use as an understudy is bigger. But she and Adam are “all or nothing,” and there’s no way she’ll let him play this one alone. In fact, Jess can’t imagine letting Adam play anything alone anymore. On fronts both financial and personal, this is the riskiest venture Jess and Adam have ever embarked upon. On a snowy New Year’s Eve they’ll never forget, they’ll need to be on top of their game—together—to save London’s hottest play, rob the city’s biggest jerk and find their happily-ever-after. "Life's too short. I'm not." You might know her as a Tony Award-winning Broadway star, who originated the role of Galinda the Good Witch in the smash musical Wicked and won a Tony for 1999's You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Or you may recognize her from her starring roles on TV -- The West Wing, Pushing Daisies, Sesame Street...oh, and her Huge Hit Sitcom Kristin on NBC. (Huge hit. L.A. breast-implant huge. Ask either of the people who watched it.) Or maybe you saw her sexy spread in FHM magazine? Or her appearance on Pat Robertson's The 700 Club? Kristin is a wonderful collection of contradictions -- but everyone who's ever met her remembers her as the little girl with the big voice. At four foot eleven, Kristin Chenoweth is an immense talent in a petite but powerful package. In this lively, laugh-out-loud book, Kristin shares her journey from Oklahoma beauty queen to Broadway leading lady, reflecting on how faith and family have kept her grounded in the dysfunctional rodeo of show biz. The daughter of an engineer and a nurse, Kristin was singing in front of thousands at Baptist conventions by age twelve and winning beauty pageants by age twenty-two. (Well, actually she was second runner-up almost every freaking time. But, hey, she's not bitter.) On her way to a career as a professional opera singer, she stopped in New York to visit a friend and went on a whim to an audition. Through a combination of talent, hard work, and (she's quick to add) the grace of God, Kristin took Broadway by storm. But of course, into every storm, the occasional drizzle of disaster must fall. Filled with wit, wisdom, and backstage insight, A Little Bit Wicked is long on love and short on sleep; it's essential reading for Kristin's legions of fans and an uplifting story for anyone seeking motivation to follow his or her dreams -- over the rainbow and beyond.

'Life Upon the Wicked Stage' is the life story of Joan Booth, who was born into an ordinary Lancashire family in 1930 and went on to perform in musical theatre and cabaret in the 1950's.Among the stars Joan worked with were Harry H Corbett, Matt Munro, Bob Monkhouse, John Normington, Jimmy Clitheroe and the married New Zealand tenor Leslie Andrews, with whom she had a long lasting and passionate affair. Other 'names' she had brief encounters with were Eric Morley of Mecca and Miss World fame; Rupert de Leon (ex-husband of film star Margaret Lockwood); and Guy Reed, the millionaire Yorkshire racehorse breeder.Joan's memoirs are peppered with fascinating and funny anecdotes of backstage life and accounts of the propositions that female artistes routinely had to deal with in the course of earning a living on and off stage in the fifties.Joan's initial stage success came in the popular operetta Lilac Time, based on the life of `Schubert. Successive chapters tell of her experiences as a principal boy in pantomimes; as an entertainer in Pontins holiday camps (where her short shorts attracted the displeasure of Len Pontins wife); as a permanently footsore dance instructor in London; and as a singer of an unlikely mix of operatic arias and comedy songs in working men's clubs.Joan also recounts her three seasons entertaining in Jersey's top hotels, where she first introduced her howling pet poodle, Lenny, into her act. Subsequently she describes experiences in both sophisticated and tawdry Northern nightclubs; how she survived a disenchanting encounter with Ivy Benson and her All Girl Band, and her final triumphant singing performance in a top Harrogate hotel, where she was a last minute cabaret substitute for a tired and emotional Fred Emney. The book's first volume finishes in 1963 with Joan finally accepting the proposal of her long time suitor, the doggedly determined Irish cocktail barman Frank Campbell, and looking forward to a more conventional life as a wife and pub landlady.

In 2004, the original Broadway production of Wicked earned 10 Tony nominations, including best musical. Based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, the show continues to run on Broadway and has touring companies throughout the United States and around the world. In Wicked: A Musical Biography, author Paul Laird explores the creation of this popular Broadway musical through an examination of draft scripts, interviews with major figures, and the study of primary musical sources such as sketches, drafts, and completed musical scores. Laird brings together an impressive amount of detail on the creation of Wicked, including a look at Maguire's novel, as well as the original source material, The Wizard of Oz. This volume also offers a history of the show's genesis along with examinations of the draft scenarios and scripts that demonstrate the show's development. Laird also explores Stephen Schwartz's life and work, providing an analysis of the composer and lyricist's work on the show through song drafts, sketches, and musical examples. Laird also surveys the show's critical reception in New York and London, noting how many critics failed to appreciate its qualities or anticipate its great success. The unusual nature of Wicked's story—dominated by two strong female leads—is also placed in the context of Broadway history. A unique look into a successful Broadway production, Wicked: A Musical Biography will be of interest to musicologists, theatre scholars, students, and general readers alike.

"Ever wonder what it's like to perform in a mega hit musical (when you have little idea what you're doing)? From her audition to closing night -- to every moment in between -- Felicia takes you behind the scenes of her first professional show (ever!) as she understudies the lead character of Elphaba in Wicked's San Francisco company. As she leaps professional hurdles, she faces personal challenges as well: falling in love after heartbreak (with a spatula-wielding muscle hunk), living far away from home (in the worst neighborhood of all time), confronting her overachiever demons (and an all-consuming fear of failure), and learning, time and again, what it means to be green"--P. Richard Seff has spent 60 years in the theatrical jungle as actor, playwright, librettist, agent, investor and now memoirist. He first acted professionally in 1946 and his last engagement onstage was in 2006. He took a 22 year leave of absence from the stage after a long run on Broadway in support of Claude Rains and on tour with Edward G. Robinson in the prize winning Darkness At Noon. During those 22 years he represented artists in the musical theatre. He left the talent agency in 1974 at the height of his career to return to the stage. In the 30 years that have followed, he's appeared in some 25 plays, for one of which (Angels Fall) he won the Carbonell Award for 'Best Supporting Actor In A Play'. He's been in 7 feature films and over 50 television series, soap operas, TV films and mini-series. He is the author of Paris Is Out! which brightened Broadway in 1970 for 104 performances. The musical Shine! for which he wrote the book, won a National Music Theatre Network Award in 2001 and has been published by Samuel French, Inc. and recorded by Original Cast Records. Hit the dressing rooms with him and discover what goes on backstage, in the wings, and behind closed doors. Learn about theatre investing in the Golden Age, when one could buy a piece of a show in the intermission on opening night. He's got tales to tell! Join him on this fun filled odyssey through the decades in shows starring Alan Alda, Ethel Merman, Chita Rivera, Dick Van Dyke, William Hurt, Christopher Reeve, Richard Thomas, Judd Hirsch, Jason Robards, in others directed by Hal Prince and written by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Come on along and listen to -- well, you know what. He's Got Tales to Tell! "Richard Seff's career in the theatre represents active participation as agent, producing associate, librettist, and, ultimately, as a skilled actor ... In fact, he was responsible for recommending me to, among others, John Kander and James and William Goldman, to take over the direction of A Family Affair in Philadelphia on its way to Broadway ... It turns out he's a fine writer as well, and this chronicle of an unusual and varied life in the theatre makes excellent and valuable reading." -- Hal Prince "Oh, what a journey we've had. I thank Richard Seff for helping mold the life that I am still enjoying today. To live it again, through his own words, fills my heart." -- Chita Rivera "He is a clever old sausage. Far more interesting to see written from his perspective than from a grander vantage point. Far more revealing and very redolent of the profession and its various joys, tribulations, and humiliations. Well done!" -- Emma Thompson "A very interesting look at our business from an angle most people never are aware of, including those who are most visibly involved." -- Alan Alda "For years Richard Seff has been one of the wittiest raconteurs on the Rialto, but a pleasure known only to the cognoscenti. Now he has gone public with a biographical reminiscence brimming with anecdota, insight and intelligence. Bravo!" -- Stefan Kanfer author of Ball of Fire

The articles that form this volume are compiled from the pages of the New York Clipper. Covering the three decades of the 1860s through 1880s, they convey a naive sentiment regarding the theatre of that day, self-conscious and protective, sensitive toward outside pressures and puritanical abuses, and self-critical of personal behavior within the little world of theatrical troupes. Here are marvelous first-hand accounts of the major theatres and players of the nineteenth-century American stage, compiled by Dr. William L. Slout, one of the best-known theatrical and circus historians of our time. Complete with reproductions of numerous contemporaneous illustrations, plus a comperhensive index.
