A murder has been committed and another could be at any moment. A fortune has gone missing, a map has mysteriously appeared and something is frightening the children at night. All is in confusion and the only thing for certain is that a detective is needed, but the first detective got a glimpse of what the children are afraid of and left without so much as a word. There are times when it becomes clear that a different sort of detective is needed; one who understands or at least accepts that threats are not always human or even physical and that solving the case will take more than a sharp eye. This is the domain of the Occult Detective. Literary history is rich with great Occult Detectives and A Grimoire of Eldritch Inquests seeks to honor and add to them as many of today's most talented Occult Detective authors offer their original tales. Steeped in tradition but with a modern edge, the first of two volumes presents 22 tales of monsters, magic and mystery investigated by those that book their trade by it.

Widdershins New Complete Edition - Widdershins - By Oliver Onions - A Classic Ghost Story. George Oliver Onions (13 November 1873 - 9 April 1961) was an English novelist who published over forty novels and story collections. Originally trained as a commercial artist, he worked as a designer of posters and books, and as a magazine illustrator during the Boer War. The first editions of his novels were published with dust jackets bearing full-colour illustrations painted by Onions himself. Encouraged by the American writer Gelett Burgess, Onions began writing fiction. [2] He married the writer Berta Ruck in 1909 and they had two sons, Arthur (born 1912) and William (born 1913). Onions legally changed his name to George Oliver in 1918, but continued to publish under the name Oliver Onions. In the book Twentieth Century Authors, Onions described his interests as motoring and science; he was also an amateur boxer as a young man. Onions wrote detective fiction, social comedy and historical fiction; Poor Man's Tapestry (1946) and its prequel, Arras of Youth (1949) are about the adventures of a juggler, Robert Gandelyn, in the fourteenth century. Onions wrote two detective novels: A Case in Camera and In Accordance with the Evidence . Two of his works are science fiction novels: New Moon (1918) about a utopian Britain, and The Tower of Oblivion (1921), featuring a middle-aged man who recedes back to his youth. A Certain Man (1931), about a magical suit of clothes, and A Shilling to Spend (1965), about a self-perpetuating coin, are fantasy novels. Onions wrote several collections of ghost stories, of which the best known is Widdershins (1911). It includes the novella The Beckoning Fair One, widely regarded as one of the best in the genre of horror fiction, especially psychological horror. On the surface, this is a conventional haunted house story: an unsuccessful writer moves into rooms in an otherwise empty house, in the hope that isolation will help his failing creativity. His sensitivity and imagination are enhanced by his seclusion, but his art, his only friend and his sanity are all destroyed in the process. The story can be read as narrating the gradual possession of the protagonist by a mysterious and possessive feminine spirit, or as a realistic description of a psychotic outbreak culminating in catatonia and murder, told from the psychotic subject's point of view. The precise description of the slow disintegration of the protagonist's mind is terrifying in either case. Another theme, shared with others of Onions' stories, is a connection between creativity and insanity; in this view, the artist is in danger of withdrawing from the world altogether and losing himself in his creation. Another noted story from Widdershins is "Rooum," about an engineer pursued by a mysterious entity.

Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Agents Mulder and Scully, and Carl Kolchak . . . Before Jules de Grandin, John Silence, and Carnacki the Ghost Finder . . . The roots of occult detective fiction reach as far back as ancient Rome, where two master plots emerged. The first involves a character whose courage and intelligence solves the mystery of a troubled spirit: a ghostly client. In the second, a character must investigate and vanquish a much more wicked supernatural foe: a demonic culprit. Showcasing E.T.A. Hoffmann, Charlotte Riddell, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Machen, and other authors, Ghostly Clients & Demonic Culprits charts the history of both plots, from antiquity to fully formed occult detectives in the early 1900s.

All New Malevolent Mysteries and Perplexing Puzzles where Sherlock Holmes works with Classic and New Occult DetectivesAs Carnacki the Ghost Finder, the famous literary occult detective, once said: "I view all reported 'hauntings' as unproven until I have examined into them, and I am bound to admit that ninety-nine cases out of a hundred turn out to be sheer bosh and fancy."In these pages, a range of contemporary authors explore 'what happens next' when the Great Detective confronts mysteries which question reason. A summons from Irene Adler's daughter; a chance encounter with one of Houdini's fraud investigators; the enigma of Dr John Silence. Mysterious events at Mary Morstan's old school, and a threat to Queen Victoria. The return of the German agent Von Bork, somewhat changed, and a desperate hunt for a killer through the alleys of London with none other than Professor Van Helsing.Join us in the first volume of this two volume anthology as Holmes finds himself working with psychic investigators old and new in pursuit of answers, and must confront his own scepticism. Tales in the traditional style - but with a twist. Can Holmes's logic work alongside the occult detectives' willingness to embrace another set of rules entirely? Paranormal - or poppycock?

After leaving a party late one Halloween, Alice Carroll has a run-in with something she would much rather forget. Haunted by nightmares and visions, she tries to carry on with her life as normal, all the while feeling as if she is losing touch with reality. Just as her visions become too much to bear, she is helped by the enigmatic Sam Hain, a self-proclaimed occult detective and alleged aficionado of the abnormal. Together, they embark on a series of adventures, investigating paranormal cases, cracking clandestine conspiracies, exploring the ethereal, and battling with forces far beyond the real. Meanwhile, in the abyss of some unworldly dimension, an evil is stirring, and from across the void a darkness is coming... If Alice thought her world had turned upside-down on Halloween, she hasn't seen the half of it yet. Sam Hain - Occult Detective: Volume I is the author's preferred text, containing the first six stories in the Sam Hain series (All Hallows' Eve, A Night in Knightsbridge, The Grimditch Butcher, The Regents, The Eye of the Oracle, Convergence) and features original artwork by Camilla Winquist. "Imagine Constantine written by Douglas Adams for Doctor Who, and you'll be roughly in the right area for this highly enjoyable series. Bron James skillfully weaves a thrilling tale of private detective Sam Hain and his plucky assistant Alice as they investigate murder, magic and other paranormal events." -Jeremy Biggs, Subversive Comics
