In diesem Buch geht es um die Selbstwerdung (Individuation) des Menschen und dafür maßgebliche Momente: Das affektive Betroffensein beschert dem Bewussthaber schon im präpersonalen Erleben so viel Selbstständigkeit, dass höchstens er in der Lage ist, die Sachverhalte seines affektiven Betroffenseins auszusagen (wenn er will, zu bekennen), obwohl die anderen ebenso wie er in der Lage sind, darüber zu sprechen. Wie weit diese frühe Subjektfähigkeit reicht, zeigt sich daran, dass auch die Person nur im affektiven Betroffensein sich selbst finden kann. Das affektive Betroffensein ist immer leiblich; deshalb wird der Leib in seinem Verhältnis zum Körper erörtert. Die Zeit passt in diesen Zusammenhang aus zwei Gründen. Erstens bohrt die vergehende Dauer in das Gleichmaß des Kontinuums ein Loch oder einen Spalt, die dafür ausreichen, dass etwas in hinlänglicher Anschauung sich als sich selbst abheben kann. Zweitens aber ist die Zeit in der sonst glatten Oberfläche der Welt und ihrer Dauer in der geschichteten Lagezeit gleichsam die Wunde, die bis zum Grund der primitiven Gegenwart als der Wurzel der Individuation durchsehen lässt. Im 10. und letzten Kapitel, "Wie der Mensch zur Welt kommt", wird schließlich die Geschichte der Selbstwerdung durch verschiedene Übergänge und Stufen von der Selbstlosigkeit im Kontinuum bis zum Eintritt des Einzelnen in die Welt als das Sammelbecken der Vereinzelung nachgezeichnet.

Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. In Grøn’s reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body, the world, other people, and God.
