Seit Jahrhunderten ist der Mensch fasziniert von jenen unheimlichen, unerklärlichen und märchenhaften Gestalten, die sich am Rande einer von Wissenschaft und Aufklärung durchfluteten Welt hartnäckig halten. Neben Trollen, Feen und Werwölfen ist gerade der Vampir in den letzten Jahren verstärkt in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit getreten. Neben unzähligen Serien, Romanen und Filmen hat dieses Interesse auch zur Spurensuche angespornt. Man fing an, nach tatsächlichen historischen Gegebenheiten zu suchen: Man versuchte den Mythos Vampir wissenschaftlich zu erklären. Im Zuge dieser Nachforschungen trat eine existierende Person ins Rampenlicht, die fortan als „erster Vampir“ galt: Vlad Tepes – ein bisher eher vernachlässigter, relativ unbedeutender Fürst der spätmittelalterlichen Walachei. Inmitten von Gepfählten soll er gespeist haben und auch sonst grausamer gewesen sein als jeder Tyrann vor ihm. Wie passend, dass der historische Beiname des Woiwoden auch noch Draculea war. Wer sonst also könnte Porträt gestanden haben für den prominentesten aller Vampire – Stokers Dracula? Was aber ist wirklich haltbar an der geschlagenen Brücke zwischen Vlad Tepes und Stokers Blutsauger? Gibt es wirklich gravierende Gründe, warum Stoker seinen Protagonisten nach diesem Fürst der Walachei benannte oder handelt es sich nur um einen bloßen Namenszufall?

Wiederaneignung, werden zum einen anhand unterschiedlichster Formen wehrhafter Kunst untersucht: etwa mit Blick auf literarische und filmische Gegennarrative, neu angeeignete Theaterstücke und -räume oder Musik, die sich mithilfe intertextueller Bezüge selbstermächtigend positioniert. Zum anderen werden Debatten, Proteste und Widerständigkeiten im öffentlichen, privaten sowie institutionellen Raum beleuchtet: in den Sozialen Medien, beim Adbusting, in Form von biografischen Interviews, in der Schule oder auch bei Arztbesuchen. Im Zentrum des Sammelbands Reclaim! stehen folglich gegenwärtige kritische Stimmen, die sich für Diversität sowie gegen Diskriminierung aufgrund von Gender, Race, Herkunft, Religion, Queerness, Aussehen, Disability oder auch Klasse aussprechen und die als Reaktionen auf sowie Aktionen gegen eine gesellschaftliche Normierung und den zunehmenden Rechtspopulismus und -ruck in Deutschland und ganz Europa zu verstehen sind. (Re-)Claiming wird in diesem kulturwissenschaftlichen Kontext als strategische – künstlerische, individuelle und/oder aktivistische – Wehrhaftigkeit und Widerständigkeit begriffen, initiiert von marginalisierten Personen und Bevölkerungsgruppen, deren Forderungen verschiedenste Aspekte gesellschaftlicher Partizipation, Gleichstellung und Sichtbarkeit betreffen. Somit versammelt der Band wissenschaftliche Analysen verschiedener künstlerischer Praxen der Postmigration zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts und ergänzt diese Perspektiven um ein Interview mit dem Autor Max Czollek zum Themenkomplex des postmigrantischen Antifaschismus sowie einen künstlerischen Beitrag der Comic-Zeichnerin Elizabeth Pich. Control of the Imaginary was first published in 1989. In Control of the Imaginary Luiz Costa Lima explains how the distinction between truth and fiction emerged at the beginning of modern times and why, upon its emergence, fiction fell under suspicion. Costa Lima not only describes the continuous relationship between Western notions of reason and subjectivity over a broad time-frame—the Renaissance to the first decade of the twentieth century—but he uses this occasion to reexamine the literary traditions of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, England, and Germany. The book reconstructs the dominant frames in the European tradition between the Middle Ages and the nineteenth century from the perspective of a Latin American who sees the culture of his native Brazil haunted by unresolved questions from the Northern Hemisphere. Costa Lima manages to synthesize positions from philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, linguistics, and history without separating the theoretical discussion from his historical reconstructions. The first chapter situates the problem and grounds the emergent distinction between truth and fiction in a very close analysis of one of the first European historians, Fernao Lopes, who sets the tone for the condemnation of fiction in the name of the truth of history and the potential for individual interpretation. Costa Lima pursues these notions through the aesthetic debates of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the writings of the French historian Michelet. He also devotes an illuminating chapter to the invention of the strictures imposed on fiction.
