Der Spracherwerb kann sich durch gesellschaftlichen Wandel ver�ndern, wie sich an der Sprachsituation der Deutschschweiz zeigt. Auf den ersten Blick liegt hier eine diglossische Verteilung der Sprachformen Hochdeutsch und Dialekt vor, und Hochdeutsch w�re demnach in einem gesteuerten Erwerbsproze� erst in der Schule zu lernen. Das war frueher auch weitgehend der Fall. Heutzutage ist - durch den Einflu� der Medien wie auch durch die allgemeine gesellschaftliche Mobilit�t - ein betr�chtliches Ma� an ungesteuertem vorschulischem Hochdeutsch-Erwerb zu registrieren. In der Volksschule wird das Hochdeutsche aber nach wie vor von einem gro�en Teil der Lehrkr�fte als erste Fremdsprache verstanden und auch so eingefuehrt. Die Studie zeigt anhand von vielen Beobachtungen aus verschiedensten Situationen die Besonderheiten dieses kindersprachlichen Hochdeutsch, diskutiert die Stellung des spezifischen Spracherwerbstyps zwischen Erst- und Zweitspracherwerb und begruendet eine Theorie des ungesteuerten vorschulischen Hochspracherwerbs in der aktuellen Situation einer diglossischen Gesellschaft.

This book explores how 15 immigrants from German-speaking Switzerland in Australia make sense of their migratory experience, of building a new life in a different language. It does so by examining their written and oral life stories. The analysis takes two complementary perspectives: Firstly, the construction of language identities is studied through the language practices and attitudes discussed and displayed by the participants. Secondly, the ways in which they create coherence in their life stories focuses on autobiographical identities where language is a medium of sense-making across their life course. The combined perspectives highlight the diversity among the participants and the complexities of language and identity construction in the context of migration.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.

Cognitive Sociolinguistics is a novel and burgeoning field of research which seeks to foster investigation into the socio-cognitive dimensions of language at a usage-based level.
