Essay aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Religion, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Da hat es die Kirche1 nun doch geschafft, dieses „mein“ Essaythema „Wie hält es die moderne Gesellschaft nun mit Kirche und Religion“ (wieder) in den Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Interesses zu stellen. Damit hat mir die Kirche wohl keinen Gefallen erwiesen. Scheint doch nun jede andere Auslegung, jede Einbringung von anderen Facetten, schwach und unpassend. In meinem Essay greife ich die Situation der Religion in der modernen Gesellschaft aus dem Blickwinkel der Begriffe Religion und Kirche auf. Ich gehe in meinem Text der Frage nach, ob die Einheit von Kirche und Religion gegeben ist und welche Motive gegebenenfalls eine Trennung bewirkt haben könnten. Ferner unterstelle ich, dass die aktuellen Geschehnisse, nämlich das allgemeine Bekanntwerden von sexuellem Missbrauch in Einrichtungen der Katholischen Kirche, nicht primärer Anlass für die Abwendung von der Institution Kirche ist. Ich behaupte, es bestand vielfach längst eine Distanz zur Kirche, und meine nicht, dass die Abwendung von der Kirche zwingend die Abwendung von der Religion zur Folge haben muss. Es ist mein Eindruck, dass die aktuellen Ereignisse zurzeit die Bedeutung aller anderen Beweggründe wie Wertewandel, Individualisierung.... marginal erscheinen lassen. Hier wird somit eine weitere Einschränkung vorgenommen wie sie bereits durch die ausschließliche Deutung von statistischen Daten (GottesdiestbesucherInnen, Zahl der Angehörigen von Religionsgemeinschaften, .....) erfolgt. Wenn diese anderen Motive ausgeklammert werden, welche Kirchenferne schon lange vor Bekanntwerden der jetzigen Ereignisse entstehen und geschehen ließen, halten die „neuen“ Ereignisse nun von einer Antwort ebenso oder ungleich mehr ab als die beanstandete einseitige Auslegung von Zahlen und Fakten. Im Folgenden will ich mich von den aktuellen Ereignissen also nicht bestimmen lassen, sondern hinterfragen, was die moderne Gesellschaft nun letztlich vom Angebot der Kirche (noch) annimmt? Ich schließe den Text mit einem persönlichen Resümee. == 1 Mit dem Begriff Kirche beziehe ich mich in meinem Text auf die Mehrheitskirche in unserem Land.

Die Frage, inwieweit Religionen eine Ressource für wechselseitige Verständigung bilden können, wo aber auch religiös bedingte Konfliktpotenziale liegen, erlangt seit einiger Zeit eine immer stärkere Bedeutung. Dies hängt auch mit einer Veränderung der Einschätzung der Bedeutung von Religion für Individuen, Gesellschaft und Politik zusammen. Nachdem es in Westeuropa lange Zeit so schien, als ob sich Religionen im Rahmen einer kontinuierlich fortschreitenden Säkularisierung im individuellen wie gesellschaftlichen Bereich verflüchtigen würden, haben wir es in den vergangenen Jahren mit einer gegenteiligen Entwicklung zu tun. Bei aller Dynamik in der Wertschätzung von Religionen sind indes mögliche Probleme nicht zu unterschätzen. Grundlegende Analysen und neue Antworten sind notwendig, damit die religiös-kulturelle Vielfalt eine Ressource für menschliches Zusammenleben und nicht einen Faktor für Missverständnisse, Spaltung und Feindschaft bildet. In diesem Zusammenhang ergeben sich zwei Fragen: Zum einen ist eine Wahl darüber zu treffen, welches Verständnis von Religion und religiös inspirierter Identität leitend ist. Die zweite Frage richtet sich darauf, inwieweit „religiöse Differenz eine Chance“ darstellt. Dieser Frage wird in diesem Buch aus ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven nachgegangen.

Angesichts der heutigen Situation in Deutschland geht dem Leser wohl ein Lächeln über die Lippen beim Lesen dieses Zitates. Haben die Christen noch irgendeinen Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft? Ist es nicht eher so, dass die moderne Zivilisation die Religionen mitsamt dem Christentum zu zersprengen droht? Wer glaubt heute überhaupt noch an den Inhalt der Bibel und die Kraft ihrer Worte? Sind Christentum und Moderne nicht zwei ambivalente Begriffe, die sich nicht miteinander vereinbaren lassen? Oder brauchen wir gerade in der Moderne einen religiösen Halt? Sicher wird jedes Individuum diese Frage anders beantworten, doch so plural unsere Gesellschaft mit ihren individuellen Vorstellungen auch ist, lassen sich doch gesamtgesellschaftliche Tendenzen auf diese Fragen finden. Die fortschreitenden Modernisierungsprozesse beeinflussen nicht nur Wirtschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft in einem hohen Maß, sondern haben auch Auswirkungen auf das private Leben sowie auf Religion und Kirche. Die Folgen lassen sich nicht auf einen Säkularisierungsprozess und ein öffentliches Verschwinden der Religion beschränken. Vielmehr - und das soll im Folgenden deutlich gemacht werden - verlaufen die gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Evolutionsprozesse parallel. Die Kennzeichen der modernen Gesellschaft wie Funktionalisierung, Differenzierung, Rationalisierung, Pluralisierung, Komplexitätserhöhung und Individualisierung prägen auch den religiösen und kirchlichen Bereich. Im diesem ersten Teil meiner Arbeit möchte ich die neuen Bedingungen der Moderne in dem Bereich Religion und Kirche darstellen. Davon ausgehend werden im zweiten Teil Überlegungen zur Entwicklung und zukünftigen Bedeutung von Religion und Kirche in Deutschland, mit der Fragestellung nach der heutigen Sozialgestalt der Kirche, folgen.
