Ida Vos heeft dat allemaal zelf meegemaakt en vertelt hoe het was en vooral hoe het vóélde een joods kind te zijn tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hoe het voelde je te moeten verbergen – onderduiken, heette dat – om uit de handen van de nazi’s te blijven. Het boek verscheen voor het eerst in 1981 en over de hele wereld zijn er nog steeds kinderen die oorlog en geweld meemaken, die moeten vluchten en zich verbergen. Ida Vos wilde kinderen die in vrijheid leven laten zien hoe erg dat is. In 1987 verscheen haar boek ook in Duitsland. Bekroond met een Vlag en Wimpel door de Griffeljury Genomineerd voor de Duitse Straatprijs voor Jeugdliteratuur
