Nicht nur Sokrates hat hat einen Tod gefunden, der ihn unsterblich werden ließ, auch viele andere Philosophen: Einige wurden ermordet, andere legten selbst Hand an sich, einer lachte sich gar tot. Auch Foucaults Tod an Aids in jüngster Zeit regte eine öffentliche Diskussion über Aids und Homosexualität an. Der Autor hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, diese Sterbeberichte zu sammeln, um den Leser in das wichtigste Kapitel des Philosophenlebens, das Sterben, einzuführen.
