Dies ist unter anderem in ethnisch-demographischen Veränderungsprozessen sichtbar. Die Facetten der Gesellschaft, in der wir leben, sind in den letzten Jahrzehnten enorm vielfältig geworden. In Österreich leben Menschen, die aus unterschiedlichen Ländern und Kulturen stammen. Viele von ihnen gehören auch verschiedenen Religionen an, die nun in einer Gesellschaft zusammentreffen. Doch wie verhalten sich überhaupt Kultur und Religion zueinander und welche Rolle nimmt Religion in der modernen Gesellschaft ein? Die Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Religion und Kultur hängt vor allem davon ab, welche Bedeutung der Kulturbegriff gerade in einer Gesellschaft hat. Bis heute hat sich kein einheitlicher Kulturbegriff durchgesetzt. Es gibt unzählige und auch viel diskutierte Definitionen von Kultur, abgestimmt auf die verschiedenen Wissenschaftsrichtungen. Gemeinsam haben all diese verschiedenen Konzepte, dass sie Kultur als etwas vom Menschen Geschaffenes sehen. Sie stellt sich dar in Ritualen, Mythen, Zeremonien und Symbolen, gemeinsamer Wahrnehmung von Bedeutungen, Beurteilungen anderer Völker und Kulturen vom Standpunkt der eigenen Kultur aus und den damit verbundenen Wertmaßstäben. Weiters dient Kultur dem Menschen dazu, sich in der Welt zu orientieren. Sie ist laut Helmer wie ein Plan und weist uns oft die Richtung, ohne dass wir uns dessen bewusst sind.

He observed the challenges of dealing with Islam in Pennsylvania. He studied how parishes in Los Angeles went about dealing with the integration of immigrants from Central America. Against this background he tries to find opportunities for parishes in Germany to integrate those people from outside who are open to dialogue. The basis for this should be an approach that sees religion and culture as a single entity.
