Das erste Kapitel ist zunächst in kurzen Zügen der Biografie Butlers gewidmet. Im zweiten Kapitel soll anhand der Erläuterung wichtiger Thesen, Begrifflichkeiten und Konzepte, die Butler anführt – insbesondere das Konzept der Performativität sowie das der intelligiblen Geschlechter – die Herstellungsweise von Geschlecht skizziert werden, während in einem abschließenden Schritt auf die Rezeption ihres Performativitätsbegriffs geschaut werden soll. "On ne naît pas femme, on le devient."/"Man ist nicht als Frau geboren, man wird es." Eben diese Einsicht Simone de Beauvoirs ist Ausgangspunkt für die teilweise radikale und deshalb wohl breit rezipierte Geschlechtertheorie Judith Butlers, insbesondere wenn es darum geht, die vermeintlich natürlich gegebenen Geschlechterverhältnisse zu entnaturalisieren und als Effekte von Machtverhältnissen und hegemonialen Diskursen herauszustellen. Denn vor allem in einem Punkt sind sich die beiden Philosophinnen einig: Geschlecht ist eine soziale Konstruktion. Was de Beauvoir in ihrem Werk Das andere Geschlecht (1992) angestoßen hat, führt Butler in ihren Schriften weiter indem sie konstatiert, dass es mehr als nur "männlich" und "weiblich" gibt – dass Geschlechtsidentität veränderbar ist.

This book provides an illuminating account of teachers’ own reflections on their experiences of teaching in urban schools. It was conceived as a direct response to policy-related and media-generated concerns about male teacher shortage and offers a critique of the call for more male role models in elementary schools to address important issues regarding gender, race and the politics of representation. By including the perspectives of minority teachers and students, and by drawing on feminist, queer and anti-racist frameworks, this book rejects the familiar tendency to resort to role modelling as a basis for explaining or addressing boys’ disaffection with schooling. Indeed, the authors argue, on the basis of their research in urban schools in Canada and Australia, that educational policy concerned with male teacher shortage and the plight of disadvantaged minority boys would benefit from engaging with analytic perspectives and empirical literature that takes readers beyond hegemonic discourses of role modelling. A compelling case is presented for the need to disarticulate discourses about role modelling from a politics of representation that is committed to addressing the reality of the impact of racial and structural inequalities on both minority teachers and students’ participation in the education system. The book also provides insight into the persistence of gender inequality as it relates to the status of elementary school teaching as women’s work.

Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? Bennett, who has been commenting on developments in women's and gender history since the 1980s, argues that the achievement of a more feminist future relies on a rich, plausible, and well-informed knowledge of the past, and she asks her readers to consider what sorts of feminist history can best advance the struggles of the twenty-first century. Bennett takes as her central problem the growing chasm between feminism and history. Closely allied in the 1970s, each has now moved away from the other. Seeking to narrow this gap, Bennett proposes that feminist historians turn their attention to the intellectual challenges posed by the persistence of patriarchy. She posits a "patriarchal equilibrium" whereby, despite many changes in women's experiences over past centuries, women's status vis-à-vis that of men has remained remarkably unchanged. Questions of gender, race, class, and sexuality have largely been left unexamined in surveillance studies. The contributors to this field-defining collection take up these questions, and in so doing provide new directions for analyzing surveillance. They use feminist theory to expose the ways in which surveillance practices and technologies are tied to systemic forms of discrimination that serve to normalize whiteness, able-bodiedness, capitalism, and heterosexuality. The symbolic order of gender in organizations - how gender relations are culturally and discursively produced and reproduced, and how they might be done' differently, are explored in this book. Silvia Gherardi focuses on the relationship between gender, power and culture in organizations and on the need to come to grips with the pervasive, elusive and ambiguous nature of gender in work settings. She introduces two key metaphors. The first is of the sexual contract, which centres on the sexuality of organizations and static' gender difference. The second, of the alchemic wedding, highlights a plurality of cultural models of femaleness and of women/work relationships, and processes of dynamic difference, transformation and transcendence.
