Jan Paweł Ferdynand Lam (1838-1886) – polski powieściopisarz, publicysta, pierwszy wybitny polski felietonista, satyryk, redaktor "Dziennika Polskiego", nauczyciel. Pochodził z rodziny niemieckiej. Świadomie wybrał narodowość polską. Wziął udział w powstaniu styczniowym. Wskutek represji został skazany na rok więzienia. W 1866 roku powrócił do Lwowa, gdzie spędził resztę życia. Był satyrykiem i polemistą. Wnikliwie komentował bieżące życie polityczne i demaskował liczne hipokryzje. Popularność przyniosły mu "Kroniki Lwowskie", czyli felietony pisane w ciągu 18 lat. Lam był też autorem kilku powieści satyrycznych: "Pan komisarz wojenny" (1863), "Wielki świat Capowic" (1869), "Koroniarz w Galicji" (1869), "Głowy do pozłoty" (1873), "Idealiści" (1876) i "Dziwne kariery" (1880). Jego ostre, satyryczne pióro porównuje się do pisarzy angielskich: Charlesa Dickensa i Wiliama Makepeace‘a Thackeraya.

Literary and Cultural Images of a Nation without a State applies Benedict Anderson's theory about the coherence of imagined communities by tracing how Galicia, the heart of Polish culture in the nineteenth-century - which would never be an independent nation-state - emerged as a historical and cultural touchstone with present-day significance for the people of Europe. After the Three Partitions and Poland's complete disappearance from Europe's political map, images of Poland arose to replace the lost kingdom with a national identity grounded in culture and tradition rather than in politics. This book examines the circumstances leading to Galicia's emergence as the imagined and representative center of Polish culture, juxtaposing the era's political realities with its literary texts to provide evidence of the cultural community that existed among ethnic Germans and Poles. Collectively, these images reflect a dialogue about Polish identity, and in consequence about the rise of a new European identity that did not correspond to ethnic nation-states but rather to a shared culture, history, and community that Galicia came to represent until its division between Poland and the Ukraine following World War I.

Continuing the work undertaken in Vol. 1 of the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe, Vol. 2 considers various topographic sites—multicultural cities, border areas, cross-cultural corridors, multiethnic regions—that cut across national boundaries, rendering them permeable to the flow of hybrid cultural messages. By focusing on the literary cultures of specific geographical locations, this volume intends to put into practice a new type of comparative study. Traditional comparative literary studies establish transnational comparisons and contrasts, but thereby reconfirm, however inadvertently, the very national borders they play down. This volume inverts the expansive momentum of comparative studies towards ever-broader regional, European, and world literary histories. While the theater of this volume is still the literary culture of East-Central Europe, the contributors focus on pinpointed local traditions and geographic nodal points. Their histories of Riga, Plovdiv, Timişoara or Budapest, of Transylvania or the Danube corridor – to take a few examples – reveal how each of these sites was during the last two-hundred years a home for a variety of foreign or ethnic literary traditions next to the one now dominant within the national borders. By foregrounding such non-national or hybrid traditions, this volume pleads for a diversification and pluralization of local and national histories. A genuine comparatist revival of literary history should involve the recognition that “treading on native grounds” means actually treading on grounds cultivated by diverse people.
