Excerpt from Wild Life in Central Africa This book is a simple account of the ripe experience of ten years spent in Central Africa, which is the tract of country known as Nyasaland and north-eastern Rhodesia. The former protectorate used to be known as British Central Africa, and the latter territory is now amalgamated iwith north-western Rhodesia, known collectively as Northern Rhodesia, to distinguish it from Southern Rhodesia, which embraces the old-time territories of Matabeleland and Mashonaland. For the last ten years I have spent a wandering sort of life in Nyasaland and north-eastern Rhodesia, so, to get a short and descriptive title, I use the title Wild Life in Central Africa. I am afraid this is rather a disjointed kind of volume, digressions are frequent, and possibly there is a certain amount of repetition. For this I can only plead that I have suffered much from malarial fever, both in India and Central Africa, and my memory is such that I sometimes forget what I have written soon afterwards. Excerpt from Central African Game and Its Spoor This handbook is intended as a help or guide to the young or inexperienced sportsman who intends making a hunting trip to Central Africa. Spoor cannot be put on paper to exactly resemble the real thing. In drawing these spoor the outlines have been well defined, and it must be noted that they are taken from picked specimens (distinct impressions in the soil). As may be surmised the finding and sketching of these spoor and dang has cost not a little time and trouble, and in the case of the lesser known or scarcer animals much questioning of native hunters before the information has been deemed reliable enough to be put on paper. It will take months, and perhaps years, of hard experience to tell at a glance to what animal a footprint belongs, and the authors themselves have often felt the want of some fairly reliable handbook while in the field, especially on going to a new country and meeting with species they have not seen before. Before one can question a native a certain knowledge of the language is necessary, and this in itself takes much study. The authors, therefore, have given the native names of the different game. Many of the ideas and conclusions put forward by the authors may not meet with the approval of perhaps older and more experienced sportsmen, but at the same time they are the result of experience, and differences of opinion concerning the habits of animals arise between most sportsmen, no two holding exactly the same views. It will be noticed that the words "generally," "often," or "usually" are of frequent occurrence in describing the habits of animals. We think it the greatest mistake to say that any animal will do this or that, as the behaviour of no two animals is any more alike than that of two human beings. Moreover the same animal may have totally different habits in different localities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from After Big Game in Central Africa: Records of a Sportsman From August 1894 to November 1897, When Crossing the Dark Continent From the Mouth of the Zambesi to the French Congo During the accomplishment of the mission with which I was charged by the Minister of Public Instruction, I travelled in Central Africa continuously in wild countries, far from civilised regions, and often, even, from districts inhabited by natives. I was thus able to devote myself wholly to my ruling passion - the pursuit of big game; - and I had the good fortune to be able to collect for the Paris Museum specimens of large fauna, having on this occasion, as on previous occasions, shot many animals. Naturally, my occupation was not exempt from danger. So I thought that readers who gave a good reception to a work of mine published four years ago would like to return with me on a journey through the African bush. Some people may think that this is rather a matter-of-fact kind of volume; but, then, I am a matter-of-fact sort of person, and dislike embellishing my writing with fanciful or fictitious matter, or to read such literature written by other authors on sport and travel. These pages are intended for the nomad big-game hunter, who loves to get away from the beaten track, where he can be free of the irksome conventionalities of civilised life, and where he can find a freedom that is impossible in more settled countries. Excerpt from The Hill of Goodbye: The Story of a Solitary White Woman's Life in Central Africa There was a great scarcity of water in this place. We ladies had to content ourselves with a little in a basin which we used alternately. It was muddy, being gathered from a hole dug in the sand. How hot it was But for the air from the sea we could hardly have existed. Yet we were told that up the river it was much hotter, the tempera ture being 120 in the shade. By day we waded through the sand, sinking up to the ankle at every step. At night we sat in the eating room. The door stood wide open. Bats flew above us under the raftered roof while we wrote letters and listened to the lap, lap of waves from the shore. A week after our arrival word came that the steamer the james Stevenson was stuck on a sand bank a short distance up the river. A number of men started in a boat to help to push her off. Every body treated it as a good joke. We ladies were much excited thinking that our escorts might be aboard. But it was not till next day that she arrived, when we learned that no one had come to meet us as yet. Three days after we rose at four in the morning to start on our river journey. It was quite dark but the air was dry for a wonder, as often a-heavy dew falls through the night. The dawn came as soon as we had crossed the gangway.
