When Ishi, "the last wild Indian," came out of hiding in August 1911, he was quickly whisked away by train to San Francisco to meet Alfred Kroeber, one of the fathers of American anthropology. When Kroeber and Ishi came face to face, it was a momentous event, not only for each man but also for the cultures they represented. Each stood on the brink--one was in danger of losing something vital while the other was in danger of disappearing altogether. Ishi was a survivor, and he viewed the bright lights of the big city with a mixture of awe and bemusement. What surprised everyone is how handily he adapted himself to the modern city while maintaining his sense of self and his culture. Kroeber was professionally trained to document Ishi's culture and his civilization. What he didn't count on was how deeply working with the man would lead him to question his own profession and his civilization--how it would rekindle a wildness of his own. Although Ishi's story has been told before in film and fiction, Wild Men is the first book to focus on the depth of Ishi and Kroeber's friendship. Exploring what their intertwined stories tell us about Indian survival in modern America and about America's fascination with the wild, this text is an ideal supplement for courses on Native American history, the U.S. West, and the history of California.

Much of the modern-day vision of Santa Claus is owed to the Clement Moore poem "The Night Before Christmas." His description of Saint Nicholas personified the "jolly old elf" known to millions of children throughout the world. However, far from being the offshoot of Saint Nicholas of Turkey, Santa Claus is the last of a long line of what scholars call "Wild Men" who were worshipped in ancient European fertility rites and came to America through Pennsylvania's Germans. This pagan creature is described from prehistoric times through his various forms--Robin Hood, The Fool, Harlequin, Satan and Robin Goodfellow--into today's carnival and Christmas scenes. In this thoroughly researched work, the origins of Santa Claus are found to stretch back over 50,000 years, jolting the foundation of Christian myths about the jolly old elf.

Zhang Jinxing, during the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, has become a Chinese folk hero, dedicating himself single-mindedly to the challenge of revealing what has evaded Chinese anthropologists and zoologists for centuries: the existence of the yeren, or wild men. From his dream of becoming a modern-day explorer, he forged a personal approach to field research derived from his apprenticing with scientists in the field rather than through formal study—the result is a uniquely humane perspective on how human beings can and should coexist with other creatures and organisms on earth. His modest, ingenuous diary accounts reveal him to be capable of great empathy and great bravery, as he faces frostbite, starvation, encounters with wild animals, and loneliness to pursue his idealistic mission at great personal cost.

Because of the differing beliefs on how Australia should be governed in the future, the country splits in two separate nations—to the south, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia becoming known as Greater Australia, and Queensland the Northern Territory and Western Australia, Northern Australia. The northern nation continues to use the old Westminster form of government, and upon review of all past registration and procedures becomes prosperous and populated by freedom-loving and happy people, while to the south, the land is governed in such a way that the needs of the environment is considered as paramount. The design of the southern government can be considered to be inefficient, cumbersome, and impractical, allowing the real power being usurped by radicals, anarchists, and power hungry near megalomaniacs. A large area of western New South Wales has been given over to indigenous people in which to live in their traditional ways. To assist in this, all white people and their improvements have been removed. Initially, this causes great suffering and deaths among the indigenous people who have become dependent on the social services and the lifestyle or way of life of the whites. When they gain a form of organisation, they actually revert to a form of living similar to that which existed prior to white settlement. Ron, in his travels escaping from Southern Australia, meets up with these people and lives with them for a while. An expedition is sent to this area from the north, brought on because of a sudden collapse in population numbers because of disease, Ron finds himself conscripted as leader. The book deals with the achievements of the expedition, the people involved, especially Ron and his lover, Gwen, and those who try to sabotage it or take share of the glory.

"Long before the age of exploration, wild men inhabited the European imagination. These fascinating, hairy creatures have a long history of representation in art, literature, and folklore, appearing among other guises as satyrs and fauns in ancient Greece, mythical forest - and mountain-dwellers in the Middle Ages, and Shakespeare's Caliban and Cervantes's Cardenio in the Renaissance. Wild folk also captured the attention of naturalists, who investigated homo ferus and homo sylvestris, and philosophers, who elaborated the image of the noble savage." "In Wild Men in the Looking Glass, Roger Bartra searches out the roots of the European wild man myth and explores its long evolution. Turning the tables on those who suggest that the primitive peoples "discovered" and colonized by European explorers gave rise to the myth, Bartra finds that the wild man myth preceded and helped shape European reactions to real peoples. Indeed, he shows that the wild man underpins the notion of civilization on which much of Western identity has been based. The man we recognize as "civilized" has not been able to take a single step without the shadow of the wild man at his heel."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
