From Midwifery today: From "Attending to "Zone", Wild Naked Ladies is a pictorial alphabet celebrating birth. Each letter has a two-page spread where it is lovingly illustrated by a photograph or artwork and accompanying text. For example, "Bonding" features a black and white photograph of a father holding his newborn while an older child looks on. The text is an excerpt from The First Hour of Life, by Marshall Klaus, MD. You'll love "Instinct", with its photo of a mother embracing her newborn. Included in the text are these words of wisdom: "I like to think that every laboring woman is given a sacred 'how to' birth script.... She reads it by instinct. The smiling baby of "Laugh" will make you smile; the text is the story of how laughter brought on labor. "Womb" is illustrated by a lovely color photo of a pregnant belly; the text includes the poem "Rocking" by Gabriela Mistral. Other words include "Kindness","Prayer","Receiving","Universe", "VBAC" and "womb".

Fiction. NAKED LADIES, the second novel by Alma Luz Villanueva, revolves around the lives of four remarkable and intriguing women. In this work, Villanueva explores interracial and interethnic relationships between Chicanas, Anglos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans at the deepest cultural and sexual levels. Villanueva considers racial prejudices and how they play out in male-female relationships, the physical abuse of women and the retribution that women exact from men, AIDS, and aspects of both heterosexual and homosexual relationships. The title of the novel, taken from wild flowers called "naked ladies," evokes the life and death battles of these women: they are vulnerable to the worst elements of this world, yet, as part of the natural cycle, they remain resilient.

Teaching Gender through Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Texts and Cultures provides a dynamic exploration of the subject of teaching gender and feminism through the fundamental corpus encompassing Latin American, Iberian and Latino authors and cultures from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The four editors have created a collaborative forum for both experienced and new voices to share multiple theoretical and practical approaches to the topic. The volume is the first to bring so many areas of study and perspectives together and will serve as a tool for reassessing what it means to teach gender in our fields while providing theoretical and concrete examples of pedagogical strategies, case studies relating to in-class experiences, and suggestions for approaching gender issues that readers can experiment with in their own classrooms. The book will engage students and educators around the topic of gender within the fields of Latin American, Latino and Iberian studies, Gender and Women’s studies, Cultural Studies, English, Education, Comparative Literature, Ethnic studies and Language and Culture for Specific Purposes within Higher Education programs. “Teaching Gender through Latin American, Latino, and Iberian Texts and Cultures makes a compelling case for the central role of feminist inquiry in higher education today ... Startlingly honest and deeply informed, the essays lead us through classroom experiences in a wide variety of institutional and disciplinary settings. Read together, these essays articulate a vision for twenty-first century feminist pedagogies that embrace a rich diversity of theory, methodology, and modality.” – Lisa Vollendorf, Professor of Spanish and Dean of Humanities and the Arts, San José State University. This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers’ contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. With a focus on women’s voices and experiences, the contributions redress both the under-representation of women and girls onscreen and the perpetuation of stereotypes, while exploring the innovative aesthetics used by these filmmakers.

Pulling out from the shelter, the mountain altitude and the weight of the train brings a monotonous sound , the sound of the steel wheels bumping each joint of the rails, creating a hypnotic effect. The passengers are unable to see the mountain beauty. The wine and the hypnotic sound have several passengers napping, and the horror cascading through the mountain meadow goes unnoticed. Suddenly, the avalanche comes crashing through the windows. Breaking glass flies through the compartments in the middle coach cars. The train is lifted off the tracks and thrown sideways as if it were a toy. The train suddenly stops in its tracks Motionless, the train sits victimized by Mother Nature, unable to move. The bright sunlight is clouded by a cloud, a cloud not of vapor but of snow and ice. Tons of frozen ice has covered the entire train in an instant. Buried beneath one of Mother Natures tools of torture, entombed, the passengers and crew are rendered helpless and at her mercy. Perched one thousand feet above Donner Lake, pushed to the edge, and hanging partially rolled over to one side, the train and her passengers are truly helpless

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2014 While few detailed surveys of fauna or flora exist in England from the period before the nineteenth century, it is possible to combine the evidence of historical sources (ranging from game books, diaries, churchwardens' accounts and even folk songs) and our wider knowledge of past land use and landscape, with contemporary analyses made by modern natural scientists, in order to model the situation at various times and places in the more remote past. This timely volume encompasses both rural and urban environments from 1650 to the mid-twentieth century, drawing on a wide variety of social, historical and ecological sources. It examines the impact of social and economic organisation on the English landscape, biodiversity, the agricultural revolution, landed estates, the coming of large-scale industry and the growth of towns and suburbs. It also develops an original perspective on the complexity and ambiguity of man/animal relationships in this post-medieval period.
