Katrina Naomi's Wild Persistence is a confident and persuasive collection of poems. The first poem 'Anti-Ambient' warns us to be on guard for the off-guard, to suspend our expectations of pure realism and to stay awake for what comes next. Initially, a move from London to Cornwall sparks poems that query and celebrate the natural world. London is mourned and also derided: "you'd taken on airs/ become grandiose with the possibilities of capital." Yet the poem also admits that the choice of a move was made by serendipitous chance: "somewhere I'd visited long ago on a rainy night, playing pool/ in a pub near a seaside bus station."Though never didactic, the poetic voice convinces us of the need to live well, to take time to celebrate a birthday, make love, consider an artwork, muse over the biography of someone admirable. This also means that we need to come face to face with some of the darker aspects of our experience, in Naomi's case the loss of a father through divorce when she was seven, and the illness experienced by her sister and partner. Another section of poems that deals with the aftermath of an attempted rape. Naomi's poetic voice is full of invigoratingly fresh outrage and is unforgiving at a distance of years to the casual passers-by who did nothing to help. She also casts a cold eye on the assailant, whom she ultimately pities, imagining him now 'fat and in his fifties' and destroyed by his predilection for violence.'...this is a liberating reminder that "there are different ways to live"...nothing can suppress the wild and quirky energy at play... Wild Persistence is the joyous affirmation we need.' – PBS"A collection of humour and revelry, lit by the repeated flare of violence and warmed by the unapologetic need to live the life of one's choosing." – New Welsh Review

The poems in Wild Persistence often involve moments when the human and natural worlds intersect: a Sandhill Crane dancing at the window of a grieving woman, a copperhead snake confronting a gardener, a billboard photo of a missing child slowly being eroded by weather and the passage of time. Although these poems mourn numerous losses, they celebrate the world in which such losses take place, turning for perspective to nature with its cyclical renewals and to the resilience of the human spirit.

Persistence Strategies Of Weeds written by Mahesh K. Upadhyaya and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-04 with Technology & Engineering categories.

An invaluable source of up-to-date information on all major aspects of weed persistence Weeds negatively impact crop yields, the quality of agricultural produce, the health of livestock and ecosystems, and various aspects of human life. Despite significant expenditures of time, money, and resources by agricultural producers, land managers, and the general public, weeds persist. Developing new methods for protecting crops and the environment requires a thorough understanding of the persistence mechanisms of weeds. In Persistence Strategies of Weeds, an international team of expert authors provide detailed information on weed seed biology, identify the vulnerabilities of different weeds, and address the underlying issues behind the problem of weed persistence despite various management methods including herbicides. Presenting a comprehensive approach to the subject, the authors describe what is already understood about weed persistence and what yet needs to be determined. Topics include the role of seed production, dissemination, seed banks, the physiology and genetics of seed dormancy, the influence of agronomic practices, seed longevity, vegetative propagation, allelopathy, predation, soil microbes, weed evolution, and more. This authoritative volume: Examines the genetic flexibility of weeds to adapt to changes in agricultural practices and management strategies Discusses the release of allelochemicals by certain weeds that inhibit the growth of competing plant species Explores the influence of climate change on weed persistence and how the efficacy of herbicides will be affected Emphasizes the importance of sustainable crop production and reducing dependence on synthetic herbicides Provides extensive coverage of the roles of genetic, environmental, and morphological factors in the regulation of weed seed dormancy Includes an overview of persistence strategies of weeds, detailed case studies, and numerous illustrative examples Persistence Strategies of Weeds is an ideal textbook for all upper-level undergraduate and graduate students of weed and pest biology, agroecology, or organic agriculture, and a must-have reference for weed scientists and weed management professionals.

During a short visit to Bremen in December 1989 John Rosenberg had several discussions with me about computer architecture. Although we had previously worked together for more than a decade in Australia we had not seen each other for over a year, following my move to Bremen in 1988. Meanwhile John was spending a year on study leave at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with Professor Ron Morrison and his persistent programming research group. From our conversations it was quite clear that John was having a most fruitful time in St. Andrews and was gaining valuable new insights into the world of persistent programming. He was very keen to explore the significance of these insights for the MONADS Project, which we had been jOintly directing since the early 1980s. MONADS was not about persistent programming. In fact it had quite different origins, in the areas of software engineering and information protection. In an earlier stage of the project our ideas on these themes had led us into the world of computer architecture and even hardware deSign, in our attempts to provide an efficient base machine for our software ideas. The most important practical result of this phase of the project had been the development of the MONADS-PC, a mini computer which would be better compared with say a V tv

Spirochetes And Immune Evasion Infection Persistence And Clearance written by Maria Gomes-Solecki and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-04 with categories.

The interface between spirochetes and the immune response is of significant importance to their pathogenesis and persistence. Evasion from the immune system leads to infections that present as Leptospirosis, Syphilis, Lyme Disease and Relapsing Fever and may lead to putative persistence and latency. Understanding the mechanisms involved in immune evasion will shed light not only on the hostpathogen factors involved in the process but also on how resistance to infection leads to protection. Broad examples include spirochetal interaction with the immune system, spirochetal molecules involved in immune evasion and in immune activation, innate immune responses in the skin and other compartments, factors involved in spirochetal adhesion to the extracellular matrix, interaction of spirochetes with antigen presenting cells, in vitro, ex vivo or in vivo, spirochetal lipoproteins and immunity. Specific examples include innate immunity to pathogenic spirochetes (T. pallidum, B. burgdorferi and Leptospira spp.), invasion and pathogenesis by L. interrogans, subversion and suppression of B cell responses by B. burgdorferi, role of antibody in clearance versus persistence of relapsing fever Borreliae, evasion of the complement system by B. burgdorferi, immune suppression by Ixodes tick saliva for effective transmission, adhesins and enzymes involved in dissemination of T. pallidum, spirochetal variable surface proteins in immune evasion, intravital imaging of pathogenic spirochetes (Borreliae and Leptospira) in host tissues, spirochete-host surface interactions. Additional specific examples for B. burgdorferi include novel approaches to control infection within the vector and/or in mammal; tick innate immune defenses and interaction of Ixodes scapularis salivary immunomodulatory molecules with human immune cells, tick-innate immune defenses (from the perspective of the tick midgut), mouse models of infection and genetic basis for pathogenicity, diverse roles of outer surface protein C. Additional specific examples for Leptospirosis include animal models of acute, sub-lethal and persistent infection; neutrophils and innate immune response; Toll-like receptor mediated B cell responses; markers of endothelial cell activation for disease severity in human leptospirosis, corticosteroid treatment of advanced human leptospirosis, and urinary biomarkers of chronic Leptospirosis.

The past decade has witnessed an explosion of information on the molecular biology of insect viruses and a frenzy of activity in applying this information to medicine and agriculture. Genetically engineered baculoviruses are presently being tested for commercial use as pesticides, and the study of such viruses is also revealing remarkable insights into basic cellular processes such as apoptosis. This comprehensive volume provides readers with knowledge of basic and applied baculovirology so that current literature in the field can be appreciated.
