This study focuses on understanding the socio-economic relevance of plant resources collected from the wild and its relation to current patterns of trade and sustainability. Grischa Brokamp reviews and analyzes the current extent of palm trade in northwestern South America, its impact, limitations and future perspective. Indeed there are conflicts between the commercialization of wild plant resources and the conservation of exploited species, which is illustrated by examples from the plant families Arecaceae and Krameriaceae.

The edited volume brings out a comprehensive collection of information relevant to wild food plants, their importance for global sustainable food security, future-readiness, and resilient agriculture. The book's primary focus is to cover topics on the diversity of wild food plants across the globe, their nutraceutical importance, production-consumption trends, integration into the current food menu, and marketing and livelihood opportunities to the indigenous people. Sustainable development goals 1, 2, and 3 are significant for a poverty-free, hunger-free world and ensure good health and wellbeing of the people, respectively. The three goals are important and interlinked as achieving zero poverty will help reduce hunger among the people. Availability of nutritional and balanced food ensures good health. Wild food plants are an essential part of a nourishing and healthy diet for indigenous communities. They are globally collected from natural habitats or cultivated at more minor scales. Although consumed locally, they are an essential part of the diets of tribal and indigenous communities worldwide and hold immense potential to alleviate global hunger. Considering their importance for global sustainable food security, it is essential to clearly understand the future role of wild food plants for future readiness and resilient agriculture. Therefore, this book provides a piece of important information on these aspects. The book is a valuable resource for the audience ranging from undergraduate science students to the NGOs and institutions involved in poverty alleviation programs, policymakers, dieticians, horticulturists, plant breeders, farmers, health experts, and food enthusiasts.

Today, the world witnesses a global resurgence of interests in plant-based drugs and cosmetics. The revival of traditional health care systems, which is mainly plant-based, has several ramifications including the challenging tasks of meeting the health care needs of the ever increasing human population. Since the majority of raw material for preparing herbal medicine is exploited from the wild and also the traditional practices of medicinal plants harvesting does not remain sustainable due to commercial interests, the loss of medicinal plants is unprecedented. People across the world use medicinal plants in several health care practices, and the loss of this valuable resource has direct bearings on these traditional health care systems. This book deals with multidisciplinary approach and contains information on different aspects of medicinal plants, which can be used as guiding tools.

Sustainable Development written by Miroslawa Czerny and has been published by Nova Science Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10 with Mountain biodiversity conservation categories.

Sustainability has become, in recent years, essential to any approach regarding development. However, the word itself has a different meaning in economic development, politics, cultural evolution and heritage, resource management and other contexts. The main meaning for the purpose of this book is that sustainability seems to be an uncomplete concept since it does not take into consideration the achievements in science and technology which alter our understanding of criteria, like durability, persistence and sustainability itself. In discussions concerning the proper management of resources and changes in the structure of the basket of resources that still remain at the disposal of humankind, the key players are human beings, with their consumption models, habits and dependence on products originating from the surrounding environment. It is quite well-known that sustainable development is regarded as a concept by which to overcome or at least ease glaring economic and social disparities between the industrialised and the developing countries not only for today, but also for the future. The assumption here holds that poverty and constant shortages facing a majority within the society of each developing country favour an over-exploitation and chaotic use of resources. The over-exploitation showing little or no care for the natural environment is pursued by individuals, small-scale entrepreneurs, and by large concerns that destroy the environment with impunity. We refer here to sustainability as a concept applied to integral rural development in peripheral regions such as the sierra of Piura in northwestern Peru and Viques in the Mantaro Valley of Central Peru. The development of rural areas in the Peruvian Andes is mainly linked with agricultural activity. Since pre-Columbian times, the management of land for farming has represented the greatest challenge for those inhabiting the region in question. The scarce resources that arable land inevitably represented here was subject to special protection. In the case of Frías, one of the key indexes where peripherally and marginalisation are concerned is the one relating to the low level of education attained. In the case of Viques, this peripherability is mainly due to its altitude and weather conditions, where crops are limited to only a few. On the other hand, our argument here is that the sustainability is a concept that needs to extend to the management of natural renewable resources, which grow wild in the Andes Mountains and have little attention by local householders. Here, we offer a number of plant fruits which may promote rural development of peripheral rural populations by providing complementary nutritional intakes as well as some extra money to satisfy other human needs. We also refer to a number of medicinal plants widely used by both the rural and urban populations, especially after the growing interest in natural medicine.
