Wild Walks written by Mark Pickering and has been published by Shoal Bay this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with North Island (N.Z.) categories.

As the title suggests, they cover 60 relatively easy walks in the North Island with the emphasis on visiting places with natural history values or, in some cases, with interesting historical stories to tell. Each walk is illustrated with a simple but clear map, along with an introductory section providing directions to the beginning of the walk, estimated walking times and points of interest along the way. Mark Pickering writes in a very interesting and accessible way and he provides many side bars discussing a particular species, features of the landscape or stories associated with the particular place - some of them delightfully quirky. (A random sample: 'Kea: A loveable, laughing, crying, clownish, cruel and unforgettable bird, the mountain parrot - sheep killer and tourist tormenter - puts on a show while its mates nip behind and rip bits off windscreen-wipers and anything else their inquisitive beaks can get around.') The books are particularly popular with tourists, many of whom probably never take any of the walks but who are attracted by the books' compact size and great colour photographs (many of them by Nic Bishop, a prize-winning nature photographer), which together make them a wonderful souvenir of the 'real' New Zealand.

How fortunate the people of Australia are to belong to a continent so rich in natural beauty. Today, Australia is recognised as one of only a few places in the world which can boast of large tracts of unspoilt wilderness. This is wilderness in the strictest sense, where it is necessary to go on foot, often for many kilometres, to visit these spectacular areas. These are Australia's best wild places, those with a reputation for wild scenery, dramatic climates and isolation. And only those prepared to walk can experience these rich and often breathtaking environments.Classic Wild Walks of Australia is more than simply a pictorial celebration of wild Australia. It is also a very practical volume. As well as providing a showcase for a fine photographic collection, the book contains highly detailed descriptions of what is considered to be the pick of Australia's wildest bushwalks. There are extensive route descriptions (which include tactical advice, grades and estimates of trip times), finely detailed maps of each region, and notes on natural history and weather conditions. This is indispensable information for those intent on responding to a challenge to see Australia on foot for themselves, or simply interested in chalking up successes on Australia's top twenty five (25) bushwalks!

Walking On Jura Islay And Colonsay written by Peter Edwards and has been published by Cicerone Press Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-15 with Travel categories.

This guidebook presents a selection of 23 walking routes on the wild and beautiful southern islands of Scotland's Inner Hebrides, with nine walks on Jura, one on neighbouring Scarba, seven on Islay and five on Colonsay, plus a spectacular 5-day trek along Jura's dramatic west coast. In addition to clear route description illustrated with 1:50,000 OS mapping, the guide offers practical advice on the various options for getting to the islands, accommodation and amenities. There are suggestions for linking walks and notes on the islands' bothies and wild-camping recommendations, making it easy to devise longer day walks or multi-day itineraries. Also included are fascinating overviews of the islands' rich history, geology, plants and wildlife. Beautiful colour photography completes the package. The wildest of the southern Hebrides, the walking on Jura is frequently rugged, with many routes crossing remote and often pathless terrain that calls for fitness, self-reliance and navigational competence. The routes on the other islands are somewhat easier, but should still not be underestimated. The routes showcase the islands' magnificent scenery, which is as diverse as it is beautiful, ranging from wild moorland to flower-strewn machair and small pockets of native woodland.

EXPLORING AN UNFORGIVING LAND In the early 1980s, John Pakenham walked a total of 1,200 miles through the volcanic desert around Lake Turkana in northern Kenya in the company of local Turkana and Samburu tribesmen and their long-suffering donkeys. Repeatedly beset by extreme thirst and dehydration, blistering heat, bitterly cold torrential rains, poisonous spiders, vindictive mosquitoes and the ever-present threat of bandits, not to mention a fatal fight between two of his companions, he was lucky to live to tell his tale. Pakenham's account provides a rare glimpse of a tough terrain and its even tougher inhabitants, where every day was a battle for survival. This is extreme travel that, four decades on, still packs a powerful punch.
