To understand modern principles of sustainable management and the conservation of wildlife species requires intimate knowledge about demography, animal behavior, and ecosystem dynamics. With emphasis on practical application and quantitative skill development, this book weaves together these disparate elements in a single coherent textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate students. It reviews analytical techniques, explaining the mathematical and statistical principles behind them, and shows how these can be used to formulate realistic objectives within an ecological framework. This third edition is comprehensive and up-to-date, and includes: Brand new chapters that disseminate rapidly developing topics in the field: habitat use and selection; habitat fragmentation, movement, and corridors; population viability. analysis, the consequences of climate change; and evolutionary responses to disturbance A thorough updating of all chapters to present important areas of wildlife research and management with recent developments and examples. A new online study aid ? a wide variety of downloadable computer programs in the freeware packages R and Mathcad, available through a companion website. Worked examples enable readers to practice calculations explained in the text and to develop a solid understanding of key statistical procedures and population models commonly used in wildlife ecology and management. The first half of the book provides a solid background in key ecological concepts. The second half uses these concepts to develop a deeper understanding of the principles underlying wildlife management and conservation. Global examples of real-life management situations provide a broad perspective on the international problems of conservation, and detailed case histories demonstrate concepts and quantitative analyses. This third edition is also valuable to professional wildlife managers, park rangers, biological resource managers, and those working in ecotourism.

The word "wildlife" is used to describe the wide variety of plant and animal species found in the biosphere. Wildlife often relates to vertebrate animals including higher plants, although the phrase may be used to include all forms of biodiversity in the natural world. Wildlife ecology is now a well-established scientific discipline that examines ecosystems on several levels, from genes to biomes. Methods covered in the book include taking an inventory of a population's health and size, studying migration patterns and physiology, assessing habitat quality, and constructing food webs. Wildlife management is difficult because it involves both cutting-edge ecological research and a well-grounded understanding of the social context in which that research must be conducted. Hence, working in wildlife ecology & management requires extensive and multidisciplinary education, extensive practical experience, and a dedication to lifelong learning. The goal of wildlife management is to strike a balance between human requirements and those of wildlife populations (usually terrestrial vertebrates). The techniques and outcomes of wildlife management in the care and conservation of animal populations and their habitats are influenced by social, political, and economic considerations

This book on Wildlife Ecology is designed to be used as a textbook for college and university students for courses on Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management and Conservation Biology. Examples are drawn from the tropics where biodiversity is rich, and where natural habitats and wildlife are seriously affected by the increasing human population. Applications of remote sensing and geographic information system, and camera trapping of wild and elusive animals are introduced to students to equip them to be able to take up professional career in wildlife research, management and conservation, using modern tools and trends in ecological sciences.

For the present purpose, we may state that "wildlife management" means "the management of animal populations within the framework of the environment." Some would find it too narrow, arguing that wildlife management should also include education, outreach, park management, law enforcement, economics and land appraisal since so many management issues are rooted in interactions between humans and animals. Many of the most pressing questions in wildlife ecology may be reduced to numbers, such as the rate of population increase, the extent of dispersion, or the effects of interactions with other species and the surrounding environment. A conceptual grasp of quantitative ecology is necessary for dealing with these issues. Because we can't always depend on experience to determine the most suitable options, mathematical models are also a vital part of decision-making in wildlife conservation and management. The book also demonstrates that a comprehensive approach is necessary to deal with environmental problems, as opposed to a piecemeal, single-pollutant, or single-medium approach.
