Was Wildnis ist und ob und wie wir Wildnis erhalten und fördern wollen, ist eine anhaltende, interdisziplinär geführte Debatte. Aus naturwissenschaftlicher Sicht geht es bei Wildnis um grosse Areale ohne menschliche Einflüsse, in denen die Natur sich selbst überlassen ist. Die geistes- und gesellschaftswissenschaftliche Sicht hingegen betont die Notwendigkeit und den Nutzen von Wildnis für den Menschen, zum Beispiel um die Verbundenheit mit der Natur zu stärken, Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit zu fördern oder zu Erholung und Gesundheit beizutragen. Um diesen konzeptionellen Widerspruch aufzulösen, wird Wildnis als psychologisches Konstrukt der wahrgenommenen «Wildnishaftigkeit» definiert. Am Beispiel der Erholungsfunktion wird dieser Ansatz sowohl theoretisch hergeleitet als auch in einer Feldstudie im Nationalpark Schwarzwald empirisch untersucht. Dabei werden Empfehlungen formuliert, wie das Erleben von Wildnis gefördert werden kann, und aufgezeigt, welche Forschungslücken geschlossen werden sollten, um ein ganzheitlicheres Wildnisverständnis aufzubauen.
