Wildnis ist ein Begriff, dem im kulturgeschichtlichen Wandel eine Vielzahl an Bedeutungen zugewiesen wurde und den die Bevölkerung bis heute sehr ambivalent betrachtet. Wie aber kam es dazu, dass Wildnis in archaischen Kulturen als eine „böse Gegenwelt“ bezeichnet wurde und wir uns heute nach der Natur sehnen? Der Anteil der Wildnis in Deutschland ist verschwindend gering. Ist sie für die Bevölkerung dann noch von Bedeutung oder ist die geringe Zahl nicht vielmehr ein Appell an uns, die wilde Natur mehr sich selbst zu überlassen? Marcus Stolte analysiert anhand der Kulturgeschichte der Wildnis die Herkunft und den Werdegang des Begriffs über mehrere Jahrhunderte bis heute. Er untersucht die heutige Wahrnehmung von Wildnis in der Gesellschaft und stellt verschiedene Wildnistypen vor, woraufhin er aus umweltethischer Sicht Argumente für und gegen den Erhalt der Wildnis darlegt. Dabei appelliert er an den Naturschutz, aber auch an die deutsche Bevölkerung, sich mit der Thematik auseinanderzusetzen und beide Sichtweisen zu kennen, um weder primäre Wildnisgebiete noch für den Naturschutz bedeutende Kulturlandschaften zu gefährden.
