Since the 1990s, following the end of postmodernism, literary theory has lost much of its dynamics. This book aims at revitalising literary theory exploring two of its historical bases: German poetics and aesthetics. Beginning in the 1770s and ending in the 1950s, the book examines nearly 200 years of this history, thereby providing the reader with a first history of poetics as well as with bibliographies of the subject. Particular attention is paid to the aesthetics and poetics of popular philosophy, of the Hegel-school, empirical and psychological tendencies in the field since the 1860s, the first steps towards a plurality of methods (1890–1930), theoretical confrontations during the Nazi-period as well as the rise of formalist and anthropological approaches from the 1930s onwards. All approaches are evaluated regarding their relevance for academia as well as for the general history of education. If possible, international references and contexts of the relevant theories are taken into account. In sum, the analysis not only shows how differentiated historical accounts in the field were but also reflects how current literary theory could move forward through the rediscovery of sunken ideas.

Stoicism has had a diverse reception in German philosophy. This is the first interpretive study of shared themes and dialogues between late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century experts on classical antiquity and philosophers. Assessing how modern philosophers have incorporated ancient resources with the context of German philosophy, chapters in this volume are devoted to philosophical giants such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Wilhelm Dilthey, Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Hans Jonas, Hans Blumenberg, and Peter Sloterdijk. Among the ancient Stoics, the focus is on Seneca, Epictetus, and doxography, but reference will also be made to texts that have so far been neglected by non-specialists. Often references to Stoic texts are playful, making it hard for non-specialists to reconstruct their understanding of the sources; by illuminating and enhancing the philosophical significance of these receptions, this book argues that they can change our understanding of Greek and Roman Stoic doctrines and authors, twentieth-century continental philosophy, and the themes which coordinate their ongoing dialogues. Some of these themes are surprising for Stoicism, such as the poetics of tragic drama and the anthropological foundations of hermeneutics. Others are already central to Stoic reception, such as the constitution of the subject in relation to various ethical, ecological, and metaphysical powers and processes; among these are contemplation and knowledge; identity and plurality; temporality, facticity, and fate; and personal, social, and planetary forms of self-cultivation and self-appropriation. Addressing the need for a synoptic vision of related continental readings of Stoicism, this book brings ancient texts into new dialogues with up-to-date scholarship, facilitating increased understanding, critical evaluation, and creative innovation within the continental response to Stoicism.

Der Geschichtlichkeit von Individualität entspricht die Unendlichkeit kultureller Variation und beiden entspricht die Differenzialität von Stimmungen. Stimmungen avancieren zu einer Art transitorischem Ort, an dem die Grundbedingungen für spezifische Weltbezüge erkennbar werden – seien diese in einem individuellen oder kollektiven Imaginären verwurzelt. Entsprechend deutet Dilthey Stimmungen in der Literatur- und Philosophiegeschichte als Objektivationen des persönlichen wie des zeitgeschichtlichen Lebens, d.h. als ästhetische Verarbeitungen der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit einer Epoche. Due to his descriptive-analytical psychology – in combination with his writings on the theory of science and the history of thought – Wilhelm Dilthey is to be regarded as a forerunner of modern scientific phenomenology. Since he also developed the terms lived 'experience' (Erlebnis) and 'mood' (Stimmung) categorically in his literary-historical studies, a return to his work is indispensable for the fundamental philosophical reflection of our present. Individual as well as collective experience is the anthropologically common factor of a theory and practice of understanding as conceptualized by Dilthey in the perspective of historical reason. The historicity of individuality corresponds to the infinity of cultural variation and both correspond to the differentiation of moods.
