Excerpt from The Boy With the U. S. Weather Men The savage fury of the tempest and the burn ing splendor of the sun in all ages have stirred the human race to fear and wonder. All the great stories and legends of the world began as weather stories. The lightnings were the thunderbolts of Jove, the thunder was the rolling of celestial chariot-wheels, and the rains of spring were a god 'dess weeping for her daughter, Nature, held a cap tive in the icy prison of Winter. We know a great deal more about the forces of the Weather than the ancients did, yet we know but little still. The hurricane does not come un heralded to our shores, the freezing grip of a cold wave is forecast in time to enable us to fight it, the lightning is tamed by the metal finger we thrust upward to the sky. But the tornado sweeps its funnel of death over our cities in spite of all we do, the cloudburst falls where it will, and rivers rush to flood with the melting of the snows upon the distant mountains. Excerpt from Notes on Meteorology: Board of Trade, 1859 Meteorology is the science treating of air and water, wind and weather, heat, cold, and climate, in combination. First, I shall endeavour to give a general view of the atmo sphere, in order that the explanations subsequently offered may be properly understood, and then I will make very brief allusions to some of the most useful instruments, not attempting anything like a complete description to those who are more conversant than I am with most of them, but simply alluding to particular points in which certain instruments now adopted are supposed to be better than those which were used some years ago, and drawing attention to some of their peculiarities. The facts here embraced are compiled in a convenient form for reference, and are given to the public at the earnest solicitation of a large number Of his friends, who have deemed this record worthy to be preserved. Local Wind Patterns In Wildcat Canyon Classic Reprint written by Clive M. Countryman and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-27 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Local Wind Patterns in Wildcat Canyon For many years fire control men and fire weather forecasters have recognized that sound information about local patterns of air move ment is a must for effective forest fire control. Meteorological information for use in fire weather forecasting and for use on going fires is now obtained from relatively few and widely spaced weather stations-most of which are not equipped with recording instruments. This system of climatic stations provides adequate information for general weather forecasts over a wide area, but the usual momentary samples of weather two or three times a day do not provide sufficient data to define local weather patterns. Then too, little is known as to how well the climatic station actually represents the weather in the surrounding area. Consequently, how the wind and other weather factors vary on the 8.10pes and in the canyons of western mountains remains largely unknown to forester and meteorologist alike.
