Since 1985, the University of Hohenheim, Germany, in collaboration with the ICRISAT Sahelian Center, Niger, has pursued the development of improved agricultural systems for smallholder farmers in the fragile agricultural ecosystem of the West African Sahel. Wind erosion is one of the constraints that limits crop production in the region and was therefore a major focus of research. In this book, scientists from different disciplines work together to present a holistic view of this crucial problem and offer possible solutions to farmers in the region. This book is intended for researchers and institutions focusing on sustainable agriculture in the West African Sahel, as well as in other parts of the world where wind erosion affects agricultural production. A deliberate effort has been made to ensure that the book will be comprehensible to a broad readership, including applied researchers, extension specialists, development workers and students working in the field of soil degradation and desertification, as well as national and international policymakers. Those involved in the planning and execution of natural resource protection programs, especially in West Africa, will also gain insights from this book. The book is written in English; the abstracts and the summary chapter are also given in French.

Master's Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: Merit class, Natural Resources Institute - University of Greenwich at Medway (-), course: Plant Health and Protection, language: English, abstract: Although it is widely recognised that environmental problems such as soil degradation erosion and desertification threaten sustained agricultural production in many States of northern Nigeria including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. Very little information is available about the current status of the potential impact of soil degradation and whether the situation is worsening in all the States of northern Nigeria. However, it is now clear that the major factor explaining the severity and spatial distribution of soil degradation such as erosion and desertification in northern Nigeria is associated with human impact such as deforestation and mismanagement of land resources. Other factors includes overgrazing, use of mechanized equipment, deforestation and lack of government concern to protect the environment in the region, but few studies have been made on applied issues related to the physical and chemical processes including erosion, runoff and leaching. These problems are widely considered as a serious problem to agricultural production and its environmental consequences will remain an important issue during the 21st century. Possible solutions such as soil management practices will help to minimise/control soil degradations which caused serious hazards to farmer's land in northern Nigeria. Sustainable soil management practices are vital for enhancing and sustaining the productivity of soil, food, livestock, water quality and other related land resources such as forestry in northern Nigeria. It is more efficient in terms of reduced environmental impact, high risk of soil degradation and soil erosion. These management practices are: (a) applying organic manure regularly, (b) growing cover c

Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, grade: A, University Of Abuja, course: Goegraphy and Environmental Management, language: English, abstract: This research is on victim’s perception of gully erosion in Edo State, Nigeria. The primary objective was to evaluate how victims understand causes, effects of gully erosion and effectiveness of erosion control measures in the study area. The research used questionnaire as a tool to examine victims perception of gully erosion in the area. Out of 480 questionnaire administered, 454 were returned and they were used for the analyses. Based on the findings of this study, victims of gully erosion in the area attributed causes to poor construction of culverts, deforestation and termination of drainages in sloppy topography. They agree that gully erosion in the area has resulted to losses of human lives, losses of buildings, displacement of people and losses of productive land. Victims also confirmed damages of infrastructures such as roads, bridges, buildings and altering of transportation corridors. Their responses revealed that gully erosion has resulted to decreased species richness, slowed succession and declining agricultural productivity which means less vegetation cover to soil, less return of organic matter and less biological and nutrient activity.
