We find ourselves engulfed in a sea of changes: political corruption, business mismanagement, stock market declines, reductions in health and other social programs, and the ever present spectre of war in the world. In the face of dwindling employment opportunities, lower wages, rising costs for everything, including higher education - our young people are often discouraged, disillusioned and demoralized. Those of us approaching retirement may feel the same way, as we watch our investments shrinking instead of growing, our pension benefits being reduced in one way or another, while at the same time our capabilities are diminishing, and opportunities for re-training and re-employment approach zero. Expectations we once had are seen to be based on very shaky foundations. We believed that we could all make it if we worked hard enough, did our homework, got a good education, knew the right people, played our cards right, and didn't rock the boat! In this process we learned self-reliance, creative thinking, positive thinking, how to be a team player, and self-judgement (including self-evaluation). So when our house of cards collapses (as inevitably it does) we are bereft. We are full of self-blame, guilt, shame, and eventually anger, blaming of others, feelings of victimization, and for some, feelings of revenge and then acts of violence. This is and has been our human story. My friend and mentor Kathleen Macloud, for over twenty years up to her death in 2002, gently and lovingly taught me about God's love for me. This is a very different story - one of hope and strength and healing. We do have a choice. We can keep on doing what we're doing that isn't working (a definition of insanity), or we can start to build our lives on a solid foundation - a spiritual foundation. That is Kathleen's story. This is an "owner's manual" to show us how to find our way back to God. Karen E. May

A trilogy of Poems and Personal Essays Captured in these small words are the larger interests of this, our world. These verses seek to inspire, expound, captivate, sometimes invigorate, but most of all, to share a portion of our lives, in this form. It is in one way an attempt to crystallize some of our more latent experiences. Some of those which we may think are less important. Yes, you may think of each and every situation, but it takes the perseverance, prudence, care and trust of our blessed minds to capture and report the precious moments, as cheerfully.

The United Arab Emirates are renowned for their enormous production of oil and the rise of great cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which attract millions of tourists annually. It is as if the great aridity of the country did not exist. Yet the UAE is essentially a vast desert, thinly peopled for thousands of years by nomads, grazing sheep, camels and growing a few crops in great oases like Al Ain and Liwa. Early people used spears and falcons to hunt rich populations of oryx, gazelle, ibex, and the iconic migratory bird, the houbara. These animals were decimated by the introduction of European vehicles and guns in the 1920s, and later by the oil boom in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the desert is virtually devoid of these wild animals. This and many other fascinating little-known highlights of the complex history of the lands now known as the UAE are revealed in this book.

Girls in the Cult is a journey into understanding the Old Order Mennonite religion. The book provides answers for "free thinkers" who ask: Why would people of a religion systematically program their children to fear the outside world? Why would the people of a religion limit a child's education to eighth grade? Why would people of a religion make their members live in the past? What could prominent Dr. Erik Erikson and his "Eight Stages in Life" say about the people of my childhood religion? How does the Amish in the City television show fit into this book? Girls in the Cult is a first-hand account of my Old Order Mennonite childhood. As a little girl, I asked my mother who I was. Her reply that we were just pilgrims passing through this world on our way to our heavenly home didn't satisfy me. Years later I searched to learn the answer, which comprises this book. My surprising self-discovery is told with clarity, honesty, and in good old-fashioned storytelling.

How to stop thinking about life’s inevitable transitions as goals to reach and learn how to navigate through times of unpredictability and uncertainty. We live in a culture, Steve Donahue writes, which loves “climbing mountains.” We want to see the peak, map out a route, and follow it to the top. Sometimes this approach works, but not always, particularly when we are enduring a personal crisis—divorce, job loss, addiction, illness, or death. We may not know exactly where we are going, how to get there, or even how we’ll know we’ve arrived. And it’s not just in times of crisis. There are many deserts in our lives, situations with no clear paths or boundaries. Finding a job is usually a mountain, but changing careers can be a desert. Having a baby is a mountain, especially for the mom. But raising a child is a desert. Battling cancer is a mountain. Living with a chronic illness is a desert. In the desert, we need to follow different rules than we follow when conquering a mountain. We need to be more intuitive, more patient, more spontaneous. Donahue outlines six “rules of desert travel” that will help us discover our direction by wandering, find our own personal oases, and cross our self-imposed borders. Shifting Sands shows us how to slow down, reflect, and embrace the changes of life graciously, naturally, and courageously.
