- Explores the wines of a significant yet under-appreciated wine region, guiding avid wine adventurers to their next new discovery - Author is a renowned writer on wine with publications including Alcohol: A History and, for the Classic Wine Library, The Wines of Canada and Wine: A Social and Cultural History of the Drink that Changed our Lives - Adds to the list of French wine titles in the Classic Wine Library series, which includes books on neighboring regions Roussillon and the Languedoc Wine production in south-west France goes back a long way. The region includes some of the first districts in France (notably Gaillac) to be planted with vines, by the Romans more than two thousand years ago. It is also the earliest-known location of scores of grape varieties, some of them precursors of international varieties such as Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Although today south-west France is the fourth region of France in terms of wine production very few wine consumers are familiar with more than two or three of its appellations. Cahors and Madiran are well-known appellations but we don't hear (or read) much about less fashionable appellations such as Rosette and Béarn. As a result the wines generally command relatively low prices. This book covers all the important aspects of south-west France in an accessible way. Although it includes the mass-produced wines of the region it focuses on quality wines made in more limited volumes. Although a number of the appellations of south-west France share similar climatic conditions (such as the influence of the Atlantic), the many small AOPs vary significantly in soils and topography, grape varieties, and the styles of wines they produce. They range from the botrytized sweet whites of Monbazillac to the teeth-staining reds of Cahors, from the distinctive dry whites of Jurançon to the tannic reds of Madiran. Phillips begins with a brief history of the region and provides an overview of the region today before considering the wines of the various sub-regions in turn, including land and climate, grape varieties, wine styles, and wine law, together with entries on their most notable producers. All colors of wine are made in south-west France, as are dry and sweet wines and sparkling and still wines. The rich diversity of the world of wine is represented in south-west France, and it is this very diversity of grape varieties and wine styles that makes the region so compelling.

Between Bordeaux and the Spanish border, reaching east to the Massif Central and the river valleys of the Dordogne and Lot, and south to the foothills of the Pyrenees, lies a unique and little-known viticultural landscape. South-West France is a wine lover's paradise that cultivates an astonishing array of grape varieties, many that grow nowhere else, and produces a fascinating assortment of wines. In this book, Paul Strang covers the South-West with enthusiasm and keen expertise, providing a history of its wine industry, including a near collapse and unlikely rebirth, and introducing readers to a region that seems to defy globalization. The outstanding local wines--made by idiosyncratic growers motivated by a passion for their profession--range from inky Tannats to honeyed late-harvest Semillons. Intrepid readers are invited to rediscover this beautiful part of France, already well known for its cuisine, castles, and cave art, for its earthy and intriguing wines. Winner of the 2009 GOURMAND World Cookbook Awards "Best Wine Atlas/Tourism Book in the World"

Books on Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh wines are few and far between. Madiran, made from Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Fer Servadou, is a masculine wine. However talented wine makers and modern techniques have tamed the tannic nature and now complex and refined examples are common. Pacherenc can be sweet or dry. Traditionally the wines are gently sweet but the modern trend is for sweeter examples taking precedence. Dry wines can be exotic and rich. The author, a self confessed amateur, sets the history of wine making against an historical context of English influence and the dogged independence of the Gascon population. The wine makers provide stories of determination in the face of adversity and a commitment to excellence that is turning around the fortunes of an appellation that came close to extinction. The book acts as an invitation to those who want to discover the wines and an inspiration to those wishing to seek out a France that is fast disappearing due to globalisation and an accelerating pace of life. Clive Coates MW has provided the Foreword; a world renowned wine writer, Clive is respected for his opinions on wine and although most famous for his books on Burgundy his expertise on French wine in general is undeniable. His insights, advice and comments have been an inspiration to the author.

Confused at the wine store ? You are not alone. French wines are amongst the best in the world, but their centuries old tradition make them understandable only to the initiated. This book will help you remember what style of wines each region produces, as well as the main appellations and their principal varieties. It will help you understand terms used on labels so you can confidently pick up a bottle of French wine and know what to expect from it. Did you know that Rasteau Sec is dry, but Champagne Sec is not ? Or the difference between Pouilly-Fumé, Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles ? Or which is the only Côte de Nuits Grand Cru that produces white wine ? While this book will help you remember all this information when you are picking your next bottle, you can also use it as a reference. Most French appellations, including the Grand Cru of Alsace and Bourgogne are cross-referenced, and a vintage chart and map of the main varieties is included. All winemaking regions are discussed: Alsace, Champagne, Beaujolais, Bordeaux, Bourgogne (Burgundy), Jura & Savoie, Languedoc-Roussillon, the Loire valley, Provence & Corse (Corsica), the Rhône valley and the South-West of France. If you are studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS), Wines and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) or French Wine Scholar (FWS), this book can be a good preparatory reading. It highlights the essential information about each region as well as dives deeper into the appellations and what makes them special.
