As an Assemblies of God minister and pastor of a diverse congre-gation, a leader in a multicultural network that is 60 percent African American, an executive in the National Black Fellowship, which seeks to "recruit, develop and empower ministers and churches to fulfill God's mission in urban America," and an AG executive presbyter, I believe God has placed me in a unique position to help our movement cultivate a diverse leadership in order to reach a diverse America. As the world's largest Protestant movement, the Assemblies of God has a powerful opportunity to leverage its influence to create pathways for African American leaders. The Assemblies of God has already proven itself as a global force in world missions. It has successfully sent forth missionaries to establish church networks, found Bible schools, and provide humanitarian outreach through healthcare, nutrition, and digging wells. With its missional focus and equipped ministers, it now has a remarkable opportunity to make significant impact in urban America. This book has the potential to face the racial divide in the United States and to make a way forward to address the sin of institutional racism and individual prejudices that still plague the landscape of this nation. As people of color are empowered to positions of leadership in our Fellowship, they can lead the Church in overcoming racial division and pave the way for a radical spiritual renewal in the nation's urban centers, which remain plagued by poverty, violence, dysfunction, and hopelessness. This will require intentionality around the promotion of black individuals in roles of leadership at all levels of the Fellowship. This book is designed to cultivate such leadership, as it promotes the strides the AG has already made over the decades and further spurs the Fellowship to continue identifying, recruiting, promoting, appointing, electing, and making space for black leaders among its ranks. The Pew Research Center noted in a 2015 study that the Assemblies of God has become the most diverse Protestant movement in the country. Despite the healthy diversity within the constituency of the Assem-blies of God, a lack of diversity within leadership prevails. While the sixty-seven districts of the Fellowship may have African Americans serving at various levels of leadership, as of 2020, only two black individuals serve as duly elected district executives: Dr. Samuel Huddleston, who serves as assistant superintendent of the Northern California and Nevada District, and myself. The General Presbytery comprises district-elected executives, pastoral representatives from each district, and representatives of ethnic or language fellowships. As of 2014, 88 (32 percent) of the 274 general presbyters are ethnic or language GPs. Minority GP representation comes predominately from either ethnic fellowship representation or language districts rather than through elected district leaders. Though the Fellowship remains racially diverse in terms of constitu-ents, the leaders at the district levels do not reflect this diversity. As a result, black leaders are underrepresented in the current electoral process within the Assemblies of God, and an opportunity exists to cultivate diversity within leadership roles. This will require working with or around the governance model of the Fellowship, which is primarily based upon elected leadership. Because of this model, minorities face a daunting task to occupy leadership positions.

Although part of a worldwide Christian spirituality, Pentecostals and Charismatics in the UK are rooted in British religiosity dating back to at least the 1920s. However, the emergence of migrant communities from the Caribbean and Africa since the 1950s has tended to attract popular attention and consequentially has come to represent the popular public face of Pentecostals and Charismatics in Britain. Latterly, however, an intellectual base has begun resisting the anti-intellectual reputation that has attached itself to Pentecostalism. This book draws upon the scholarship of eminent academics and practitioners in the field of Pentecostal and Charismatic studies, who together consider the history of pentecostal and charismatic movements, their relationship with mainline Christian churches and their engagement with the social, economic and political world. Topics covered include: the theological and doctrinal marks in British Pentecostalism, Anglican-Pentecostal relations, and the impact of the Vineyard movement on Charismatic and Pentecostal worship in the UK. Contributors include: Professor Anne E. Dyer (Mattersey Hall), Professor William K. Kay (Chester University), Professor David Hilborn, (Moorlands College), Dr R. David Muir (University of Roehampton) and Dr Babatunde A. Adedibu (Redeemed Christian Bible College, Nigeria). With a foreword by Justin Welby.

What causes us as a people of faith to think and act the way we think and act? Are we motivated by whatever is most practical, by a particular understanding of Scripture, by the influence of the culture around us, or by something more profound? On the premise that Pentecostalism does have much to contribute to the study of ethics, this book explores how one group, the American Assemblies of God, has wrestled with issues of racism, women in ministry, and Christian involvement in war. In the process, readers are invited to examine the connection--or disconnect--between what we believe and how we live out our faith.

It was born a scant ninety-five years ago in a rundown warehouse on Azusa Street in Los Angeles. For days the religious-revival service there went on and on-and within a week the Los Angeles Times was reporting on a "weird babble" coming from the building. Believers were "speaking in tongues," the way they did at the first Pentecost recorded in the Bible?and a pentecostal movement was created that would, by the start of the twenty-first century, attract over 400 million followers worldwide. Harvey Cox has traveled the globe to visit and worship with pentecostal congregations on four continents, and he has written a dynamic, provocative history of this explosion of spirituality?a movement that represents no less than a tidal change in what religion is and what it means to people.

Al-Qaeda started in late 1980s in the Af-Pak area, and the group became forever synonymous with the attacks on the World Trade Center. But that was not the beginning. Al-Qaeda plotted numerous conflicts before the September 11, 2001. Little did everyone know at the time, but the attacks would set into motion a series of events that would exacerbate the spread of terrorwith the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan adding fuel to the fire. Sawad Hadian expert in conflict studies and religious politicstraces the history of al-Qaeda, its leaders, and how its deviant psychology has allowed it and its affiliates to win money and followers. He also highlights how: uprisings during the Arab Spring of December 2010 reshaped the Middle East; ordinary men and women in Syria continue to suffer, victimized by terrorists and the ruthless Assad regime; and turbulence caused by the war in Syria will continue to haunt the country and the world for decadesregardless of the outcome of the current struggle. With hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing states that sponsor terrorism and with attacks on the rise, its more important than ever to fully understand the history of terrorism if were to have any chance of vanquishing Looming Black Shadows.

"This volume on Christianity and Cultures is a way of marking an important milestone in the relatively short story of the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies (OCMS). The papers here have been exclusively sourced from Transformation, a quarterly journal of OCMS and seek to provide a tripartite view of Christianity's engagement with cultures by focusing on the question: how is Christian thinking forming or reforming through its interaction with the varied contexts it encounters? As Christianity has taken and still takes shape in multiple contexts, it naturally results in a variety of expressions and emphases. One can gain an appreciation of these by studying different strands of theological-missiological thinking, socio-political engagements and forms of family relationships in interaction with the host cultures."--BOOK JACKET.
