This magnificent volume is devoted to Winslow Homer's great landscape and marine paintings in the 1890's, which many believe to be the zenith of his art. By 1890, having spent hundreds of hours studying the ocean and its relationship to the cliffs at Prout's Neck, Maine, and penetrated meanings both universal and particular, he had achieved a complete mastery of marine painting, and from then on produced masterpiece after masterpiece, a large majority of them inspired by his Prout's Neck surroundings. -- Provided by publisher.

Winslow Homer was the antithesis of the unkempt bohemian artist of the nineteenth century. He not only always maintained the appearance of an English country gentleman, but was also an everyday sort of man, both in his life and his paintings. Yet he is ranked as one of America's greatest painters. The reason is not hard to discover, for Winslow Homer's powerful epic statements spoke for America with a breadth that few other artists have achieved. This is a lively, intimate, and immensely readable portrait of the artist that throws a new light on Homer's life and puts it in fresh perspective. This biography concentrates on Homer's years at Prout’s Neck on Maine’s rugged coast, where he would create his finest paintings, from 1883 until his death in 1920.

Speculative Landscapes written by Ross Barrett and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-12 with Art categories.

Speculative Landscapes offers the first comprehensive account of American artists’ financial involvements in and creative responses to the nineteenth-century real estate economy. Examining the dealings of five painters who participated actively in this economy—Daniel Huntington, John Quidor, Eastman Johnson, Martin Johnson Heade, and Winslow Homer—Ross Barrett argues that the experience of property investment exposed artists to new ways of seeing and representing land, inspiring them to develop innovative figural, landscape, and marine paintings that radically reworked visual conventions. This approach moved beyond just aesthetics, however, and the book traces how artists creatively interrogated the economic, environmental, and cultural dynamics of American real estate capitalism. In doing so, Speculative Landscapes reveals how the provocative experience of land investment spurred painters to produce uniquely insightful critiques of the emerging real estate economy, critiques that uncovered its fiscal perils and social costs and imagined spaces outside the regime of private property.

"With this psychosocial approach, Johns relates the wood-engraved illustrations of Homer's early career to the values of his family; his images of the Civil War to the context of his young manhood; his paintings of the social scene and young women's place in it to his own potential for marriage; his images of fisherwomen at Cullercoats and fishermen at Prout's Neck to his interior vision during middle age; and his intrigue with the sea in his late works to his identification with the larger processes of the universe."--BOOK JACKET.
